What will happen when the 4080Ti comes out?

Hi,

I'm in real need of a new rig... and I'm at the time of my life where I want to go relatively BIG. Not 4090 big... i'm still human, but I was considering the 4080.

However, everywhere I read it sounds like it's known to be 'a bad deal' even though it seems to be a great card. Lots of advice seems to say "Wait for the 4080Ti". But what does that actually mean for me?
  • Does it mean that when the 4080Ti comes out, it will be a better card for the same price? (surely it will still cost more)
  • Does it mean that the 4080 (regular) will reduce in price? (so I can then get a bit more affordability)
  • Does it mean that I should just skip the 4080 and the Ti version, and just save for a 4090, switch to AMD, or drop down to a different card?
I'm a total noob with this stuff and in complete analysis paralysis at the moment. Would hate to let my impatience result in buyer's regret.

Thanks everyone!
I wouldn't wait. Life is short, we might not even live to see 4080Ti which we don't even know in how many months it's coming. Just get what makes sense to you now and don't wait more than few days at most - it won't make you any happier. Also, i wouldn't buy anything for "future proofing" as it's been proven many times over the years that vendors will just come up with new tech next generation that will make current gen unsupported and will then push Devs to use it heavily in games, so you feel compelled to upgrade anyway. But each to their own.

That said, 4090 that I have (used for work and gaming) is quite too much for most standard games in 1440p ultra wide already. For gaming I run it with 50% power limit or even less - and still achieve 175 FPS (maximum of my monitor). For you even cheap cards from 6800 series would be plenty fast for few years to come, unless you insist on ultra ray tracing details - then even 4090 might not be enough in places without DLSS 3, soon.

Do you do anything that specifically benefits from an nvidia card (like workstation apps or VR), or do you only game?

Just gaming for me :)

From the sounds of things, I should go for a cheaper card.... was thinking the 7900XT which still sounds like overkill but it seems to be cheaper than last gen cards (what the hell is going on? :D).

The 7900 XT right now is probably the best value card available.

20gb ram
rasterization perf not fair off a 4080
ray tracing perf not far off a 4070ti

At £750 it makes the 4080 and 4070 look expensive (not hard i know)

Also by not having 12GB vram or less, they are not obsolete from Day 1.

For those that can only consider buying Nvidia, the 4080 with 16GB vram is the only option that make sense for anyone plans on using it for at least over the next 2-3 years...shame the pricing is ridiculous.

The 4070/4070 are really a sham for not having 256-bit bus and 16GB vram.

I wouldn't trade my 4070 for any radeon even if it had 100gb vram. its features and software support are years behind geforce.

Come now, we know just picking one game/bench isn't very scientific.

My comment was based on techpowerup's relative average

It is only about 10% off on average.

Now if we play the cherry picking game:

OMG 7900XT FASTER THAN 4080 IN NORMAL RASTERIZATION!!

;)

Cyberpunk is not you average weak ass rt game where radeon can cope, it's nearly 50% slower than the 4070ti, even the 4070 beats it. So nowhere near as good in proper RT.

This is getting surprisingly spicy! But on the topic... I have heard about Nvidia having cool software stuff like DLSS which Radeon doesn't (and there was some other software solution that like doubled your frame rate... can't remember the name). Is that a real consideration for a 1080p person like me? Or just for uber fidelity kings?

RT Ultra setting 4070TI is indeed be faster, but it's not the kind of frame rate that most serious gamers would consider ideal anyway (less than solid 60fps), so most of them would be playing the game with with RT at Medium setting instead which the 7900XT would be around the same performance as the 4070ti.

Also outside of RT the 7900XT is on average around 13-15% faster than the 4070ti, and not have the vram issue of the 12GB cards.

My 6 year old 1080ti can play all games on high+ settings at 1080p. So I wouldn't worry what they say just let them willy wave and do helicopters whatever helps them feel better about their purchase lol.

The newer gen are really for 1440p+ resolutions, if you are looking to upgrade for 1080p purposes in all honestly completly ignore this gen and look for a cheap previous gen card. 2nd 1080tis are under 200 now.

Alternitively if you want 1080p wait for the low "cheaper" models coming in the future.
