Greenlizard0 Premier League Football Thread ** spoilers ** [2nd -5th May 2025]

It's easy to criticise individuals but it's always hard to just throw in half a side and expect them to play well. The midfield for instance, not only have 2 of them barely featured much beyond a few cameo's all season but I'd guess they've never played as a 3 before. Expecting them to just rock up and play like a well oiled machine was somewhat optimistic.
When I saw the selection I didnt think the midfield would play terribly well as a unit due to that very reason but some performances were just really bad, Jones passed the ball directly to a Chelsea player 4 times (once in the first half, 3 in the 2nd) and each time he wasnt under pressure or being challenged at the time, they were just really poor sloppy passes. He ought to be doing basics like that much better, even with limited play time. Quansah I feel sorry for, I think theres a good player in him but he needs play time and he simply wont get that with us, for him I think its going to be a case of having to move if he wants to further his career, maybe we can stick a buyback on him. Elliott, probably in the same boat, first start this season and I get the impression that Slot doesnt fancy him, I dont see him getting the playtime he needs (especially if we do strengthen in his positions in the summer) , Jota...well, much as I like him, I think we have/will have others in his position who can do better and I think he would be an attractive buy for some premier league clubs in the summer. Nunez, 100% gone. Tsimikas, if Kerkez comes, then Robertson is probably a more sensible back up to Kerkez (for his veterancy and dressing room presence) than Tsimikas. Endo, 33, still does well, worth keeping him til his contract end now I would say. Bradley, definite keeper.

Agree with @Tombstone. You can't expect a really smooth team performance from dropping that amount of players into the normal team but it was basic things that were poor from a lot of the players. Jones in particular with his loose passing either in or into the final third, under no pressure.

I couldn't have cared about the game when it started but I ended up annoyed at full time, because that Chelsea team is not very good at all. I didn't think we played particularly well despite high possession and we were still able to get into good positions time and time again. Jota was anonymous again and Nunez had his customary point blank miss. Wouldn't be too upset to see both go in the summer. Quansah looks a shell of the player he did when he first came in. Not sure if it's confidence or not but a mistake is never too far away.

Regardless of the changes some errors were basic such as Jones passing it to them directly.

Cheisa had ball taken off him simply cause he didn’t look up one stage.

Jota was Jota, scores a few gets injured blows cold again rinse and repeat

The Chelsea game is massive. I hope the team turn up and the fans bring the noise.
Yeah, the kick off time isn’t usually conducive to a raucous atmosphere though. On a podcast I listen to a lad suggested the club give everyone two free pints before the game to help get them in the mood, the cost easily justifiable.

Looks pretty stonewall, if anything there are two fouls for the penalty.
Just looked like he stands on the ball trying to control it and is already falling over. Think he hits the deck without a forest player touching him. Maybe contact is a foul though.

I know it sounds ridiculous, but I've not seen a player move like Eze since Ronaldinho. I'm not saying he's anywhere near as good, but there are some real similarities

I still don't know what to make of him. He's clearly a very talented player but I think he struggles for a position, at least in a system that most of the top sides play. I'm not sure he's quick or direct enough to play as an out and out forward and I don't see him in a midfield 3. There's a lot of talk about him moving on this summer but I just don't see where he goes. The role at Palace just seems perfect for him and there's only really Chelsea (and they've got Palmer there) and Utd (who are seemingly in for Cunha) who play systems that you can see him working in. I could for example see where he gets into our side - he's not playing wide in attack for us and I'm not sure he's enough of a midfielder to play in Szobo's role. Same story at Arsenal and probably City, although Pep might be more inclined to play him as a midfielder.

City apparently are looking at Gibbs White so I guess Eze is sort of similar, probably better though

I'm not sure they're that similar. They might play in a similar position but Gibbs-White is more of a midfielder - he's more physical and will do more defensive work. Eze just feels a bit too much of a luxury player unless you play a very specific system.
