Hiking trousers suggestions

Actually just checked and I also have some new mountain warehouse with a crotch split ! They were really cheap though but again puts me off budget stuff unless using as disposable like I did on my across Pyranees and Spain jaunt ( also a big theft risk in the alburgues on public washing lines)

Another vote for the Craghoppers Kiwi, first pair lasted me 4 years of hiking, scout camps and lots of general day-to-day wear, which is pretty good going for me. I like the convertible ones, saves carrying a pair of shorts as well in case it gets hot

Ahhh, I'd be up for that. Doing the hikes with my partner and she loves meeting new people anyway. If we swing by Surrey way, I'll let you know. We were thinking of going to a few nature reserves near/past Guildford.

Thursley Common, Frensham, Bourne Woods and the Devils Punchbowl would be my suggestion for Surrey. I walk the dog on them all and also don’t mind meeting up/being a guide.

I wear some trousers by Revolution Race.

As the forum well knows, I don't wear hiking trousers. I'm shorts all year round. With bonus of leggings if it gets really cold. And it has to get really cold for them to come on.

I have some arc'teryx gamma shorts that I wear most of the time. I did have some cragghopper cargo short type shorts. But I like the light/quick dry material better.

I never wear hiking trousers as I don't like material flapping around and getting caught on bramble.

For me, what I wear on the lower half isn't as important as the upper half. You can probably just get something cheap from decathlon etc.

get the ones with zip away trousers so you can turn them into shorts to suit the weather, the climate can vary a lot during a day in the uk and definitely will if you're hiking up some altitude

I tried these. 2 different pairs and I could always feel the zip. And hated it. But sure there are better options

I just stick with Mountain Equipment these days, had problems with other brands. Every ME product is made to do a job rather than hit a price point, and is immaculately finished and with quality materials.

Their Ibex trousers are probably best for general hiking. I don't hike, but for warm weather mountaineering I use their Comici trousers, or the cotton Anvil ones for general climbing. For cold weather the Kinesis trousers, and for really crappy weather or ice climbing, I have Tupilaks.

These things are awful, just buy shorts and trousers. Or decent breathable trousers, with ventilation zips.

Some decent suggestions all, thank you. I do like the sound of the Mountain Equipment ones mentioned. Though, looking at trousers have made me realise more how I hate online clothes shopping.

The faff with ordering something, waiting for it to arrive, trying them on only for them to not fit properly, too long, etc. And then I have to begin the return process. Just so much longer than going to a shop and trying stuff on.

Might just pop into a Mountain Warehouse or Go Outdoors tbh, rather than faffing around online trying to order a pair.

Though, the downside seems to be that some suggestions mentioned are online only :(

Having retired i wear walking trousers all year, lined in winter and lightweight in summer. Usually never pay above £25.

Also retired, I have been using RevolutionRace for Summer and Winter gear - £50 to £80 is the area I look at.

I opt for the baselayer only plus waterproof outer option in colder seasons. Stretch fit and trackies would be my next choice, then climbing shorts for pure summer, (and just use sun cream/ bug spray etc, and be mindful of foliage).

I've often found walking trousers just a bit weighty or restrictive, and if carrying full waterproofs then putting them over walking trousers isn't the most comfortable.

I've had a few pairs of Mountain Warehouse "stretch" walking trousers. Found they were comfy, light & dry quick. I bought them a few years ago though, so they probably don't do the exact same anymore, but worth a look at similar.

They're really personal. I've seen lots of people swear by keela but the trousers I got were for tall lanky people. Even in my size the cut just didn't sit well for scrambling kind of stuff for me.

Montane terra if you're a midget like me. Alpkit also really good value.

Definitely try then on and make sure you get good movement without them dragging on your legs.
