It's not the glancing bit I was alluding to. It is the phone dropping of that string me and Hades are concerned about.

Actually it's pretty secure. I zip tied it through the hole in the case, used cellotape around the phone and case (just in case the phone plops out of the case). The bungees hold it even tighter.

It's not going anywhere. In fact I was holding the phone with all the weight of the bag and stuff inside, and it was secure as anything.

Just get lost for an hour before stopping to check google maps like a normal person :D :p
I've taken off my Quad Lock stuff a couple of weeks back as it's coming with me on a plane in a few days, but then I had to ride the bike again when a friend visited - and for some reason i still took the lead! It was quite amusing how often my head auto-pilots a glance down... at nothing! Had to remember to actually read the road

You mean you don't ride like this?

Talking of which someone did a "selfie" driving in a car park.. FFS can people put phone down for 5 seconds?

If I had a go pro I'd have sent that to the police/dvla

I didn’t realise before looking in to it in more detail just how pricey 125cc bikes seem to be. There seems to be a big void in priced, you can either pick up some older ones around the £2k price point with 10-20k miles on that are at best 2016 or older, or then you jump straight up to the 2020 onwards and the £3.5k price range.

Just struggling to find an appropriate second hand bike that my daughter can practice on a little more before giving the cbt another go, that she won’t feel guilty about if she drops a few times as she gets used to the weight.

Anyone else experience this when looking for a 125?

Also the insurance! £1k per year for a £2k bike…mental (that’s for me at the grand old age of 42 with no accidents or convictions on my car licence.)

I thought new versus secondhand, but don't know if someone dropped or trashed it, also people messed me around (they didn't have a V5) two year warranty on new, so even if it's simple job, how much do mechanics charge..

Could have got a Sym Jet 14 for £1500, and only did a couple of thousand miles on, I think 2022 model. The big brand yamaha/suzuki/honda etc are all expensive even when pretty tired and high miles

I bought a new Sym Jet X

Insurance for me was £570, that's with putting in the shed. Some other quotes/bikes are £1200-£2500. Putting in quote for a shed saved a lot

Eek. Worse every year. The sooner you can get to big boy bikes the better perhaps. How long will your daughter need to be on this 125?

Also dropping something that's been dropped before is much better on the old anxiety brain part than dropping a super clean never dropped bike. I think most of us have been there!

My quotes were with it garaged!!

Who did you go with for the £570 price point and was it comprehensive or TPFF?

Hopefully only 1 year as she turns 18 in November then by next November she can do her restricted A2 I think it is, so bigger bike option then.

Yeah the whole drop old vs new thing is the key for her mind sake. Remove the anxiety pressure so there is one less barrier.

I’m just v-suprised that 125’s are so close in price to bigger bikes!

It's like little cars, they hold their value well because it's what younger people tend to want when they pass. With 125s you have the added bit of not even needing a licence to ride them so they're even more popular.

Fully comp. Bikesure. Also with helmet and leathers protection - considering the price of those well worth the £20 a year. Also additional serious injuries protection.

Hastings direct was cheap as well.

yeah sucks have to get a 125, I'd rather have got the Joymax 300 and be done with buying/selling/buying etc.

Pity there is a firmware lock on a 300, locks to 15hp with CBT/L plates, then unlock once you do A1/A2 license.

I reckon 300 will be enough for me.

I suppose little bikes get dropped a lot. And youngens be youngening. And little bikes are easier to steal than my heart.

As Tom says, like getting a Fiesta as a first car, when a Mondeo - that almost nobody gets - ends up being cheaper to insure. Or whatever the 2025 equivalent is.

Finding a good example of whatever is key. And then having it 'serviced' so you're confident that the brakes etc work.

Just saw a bike on facebook as example

CG125 if you really don't care about it.

YBR / CBF jf you want something a bit better.

It's a 125. It'll either have been thrown down the road, or is yet to be thrown down the road.

Buy one used, let her bang it around a bit, then sell for the same price you paid for it.

Have you checked on FB Marketplace? A quick search showed me some decent bikes for around £1500/1600. As long as the seller checks out to be genuine you should be good.

As per my post there seems to be a big difference in age and mileage between the sub £2k price mark and the £3.5k range and above.

Might just bite the bullet and get something in the upper end range, unless I can convince the daughter to suck it up and ride around on a CB125f for the year.

Where abouts in UK are you and what sort of age mileage you would be comfortable with for the 125 in the 2k budget? Anything Japanese should be very reliable.

Edit: Posting an example from AT below.
