why all the hate for hs2?

The main purpose of it though was to boost the economy in Northern cities

No, that was the reason stated to try and get people to agree to built it. The actual reason for building it has always been simple: we are the only major country in Europe without a proper high speed line, so we had to have one. It was always a vanity project. The fluff is just PR.

I still dont understand why we need this and Im originally from the Birmingham area.
Basically, the current network was the remnants of one built in the 1800s, it was at capacity so they had two options:

1: They could upgrade/improve the existing network which would be a marginal improvement and be a problem again in a couple of decades.
2: They could embark on a large scale Victorian-esque project to build a new high speed line, this would dramatically increase capacity allowing for many more passengers to transit while also increasing capacity for freight on the older line, this would reduce freight and passenger traffic on the motorway network which combined with upgrades there would help reduce motorway congestion and pollution.

In an unprecedented move they chose to do both.

Then of course the Murdoch media realised they could make a lot of money by crapping on it, so they fabricated a narrative that it was all about speed not capacity and that the project was wasting billions just to save 30 minutes between London and Birmingham, it was the most expensive rail project ever, etc. Millions of people fell for it, the project became a pariah, the cost rose over time, the Conservatives sabotaged it on their way out of office, etc, etc.
