a new kind of terrorism

Environmental terrorism is so immoral, it's just wrong in every sense of the word. That picture of the goat by the tree just makes me so sad and angry.

Just been watching this on the news. 2/3 of the Country is ablaze! Homes, Museums, national treasures, everything is burning, this is a great loss:(

I am normally against the death penalty, but I would have to make an exception in this case. You just simply don't torch Greece like that. It's a giant massive NO.

yes was saved the last minute. oh and around 11.30 tonight highly flammable stuff were found outside the navy helicopter base in athens. a minister told in telly we are faced with an assymetric threat. panic lol

How far away are you from the fires?, I heard about it but had no idea it was this devastating ... just thought it was a few forest fires but didnt relise that many have died or have been injured, and its been done diliberatly ... oh my.

An old lady was asked in telly how she feels about all this destruction. She replied that even the germans were looking after the forest during occupation, they found it beautiful :S

I know there is a lot of fire but its seems almost no where near under control?
Are the fire figher fighters not used to fighting forrest fires over there?

When you have 237 simultaneous fires... it's impossible to control all of them... especially when you have so much wind... and Greece gets a lot of wind.

Even in the south of France... (and France probably has the best fire-fighters in the world)... with their much much bigger budget and better equipment, they struggle to control a few fires... let alone hundreads.

and yes... we do have seasoned firefighters... but the terrain, the winds and the lack of people to control all these fires, is just too much.... obviously..

Also how have so many people been killed? Down here when people get killed buy a bush fire its normaly because they live in the hills with big trees all around them and there house on the edge of a national park or they live on a farm with a dry crop ready for harvest.
Does Greece have a lot of terrain like Australia and people like in the same type of areas??

As far as I know, most of the people killed live in mountain villages, close to trees or other vegetation (which is dry in the summer so burns FAST).... most villages only have a single road connecting them... if the fire is fast enough and blocks the road... there's not much you can do than run... and most of the times... the fire runs faster... :(

62 people dead, dozens of villages burned, dozens others with damages

worst recorded fire in the last centuries apparently...

i'd just like to ask the people who started this.... if it was worth it.......

The image from the 26th of August looks even worse than the other one I posted (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:AERONET_FORTH_CRETE.2007238.aqua.250m.jpg) :(

Special mention should go to Spain and Italy, who sent aid despite their own countries being on fire.

In the meantime, more petrol bombs have been found, there are reports of firefighters being drowned in false alert calls to get them to leave their stations...then the ******* burn unprotected places...that's how Mt Imitos caught fire.

My aunt says breathing is difficult in Athens, the sun is blocked out by all the ashes and clouds :( The environmental forecast for Athens in future years - increased flooding, increased temparatures, likely to be the same for all affected regions.

Meanwhile, a huge inflation rise is expected, as many of the areas are big agricultural producers and Greece does not import a lot of food.

I hope they catch those ****** that did this and put them in a room with the victims  And the damn government should resign too, NO preparations had been made:rolleyes:

What a terrible loss. My sympathies are with the Greek people at this time.

I am travelling to Crete via Athens in mid-September at election time - it's my first time to Greece and I know little about the country, but it is always sad to see such devastating environmental damage and hear of loss of life, particular if caused by (in)humans.
