Ever since the brilliance and sheer joy of the film hit me about 2 years ago, I've literally not been able to enjoy a film ever since.

I cannot even sit through one without wanting to get a book out.

The Godfather has ruined films forever; if I could watch no other I would not mind!

Can anyone perhaps suggest a film to match it?

I have seen Casino, Goodfellas, etc - but none of course compare. :(

Once Upon A Time In America?

For simply brilliant films I'd suggest 12 Angry Men, The Shawshank Redemption, Casablanca and Dr Strangelove: Or How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love The Bomb.

//edit you'd also be better off in the Music and Box Office sub-forum. :)

I suppose I do mean Gangsta films - but for me, extreme human experiences are what really captivate me. Which is why I also am very fond of war movies.

Platoon is probably my favourite, then closely followed by Deer Hunter. What I particularly like about Deer Hunter and Platoon was the absolute total lack of glorification, there is nothing redeeming about them. Deer Hunter in particular I thought was so sad in the economic context of the poor working class men.

I thought the Counterfitters was excellent, and Downfall too, both very gripping. Easily my next favourite films.

Apocalyse now is too far fetched for me; saving private ryan, althoug groundbreaking, to me actually romantises war too much and the notion of heroism and courage - rather than the brutality and sorrow that Platoon and Deer Hunter does so well. I did, however, think Band of Brothers was superb, much more sensitive.

Full Metal jacket is another good one; but to me its a little too blunt, too much like a comic book to be truly great.

I haven't actually seen Das Boot - thanks for the recommendation I even think I might have it on DVD but have never watched it.

I really enjoyed road to perdition and once upon a time in america, i do like the godfather trilogy, but with theese two films being based on irish and jewish gangsters, theyre a nice change from the normal italian mafia movies.

If its not only gangster films then:

Shawshank Redemption
Zodiac (I have lost some faith in IMDb because this isn't even in the Top 250)
12 Angry Men (brilliant film and quite short if you want something not too long)
This is England
Trainspotting

Obviously not the same genre as Godfather or war films, but damn these are brilliant films.
