I was thinking of getting one done abroad, and I was advised to buy my own needles to reduce risk of some kind of disease. No idea what hygiene standards are like here though.

I always associate the eagle silhouette with America for some reason. I don't think our generation is as concerned with that whole Germany 'thing' as the last one is (they have good reason though obviously), people have moved on, I think it's 'safe' to get something like that now if you ask me.

Thankyou! My thoughts exactly. In 100 years who's honestly gonna play the Nazi card? It's like people today playing the Native American card. It just doesn't really happen. People don't care what happened in the distant past on a common scale because it does not effect their life in any substantial way. The same will happen with Nazi's. Sure what they did was bad (very, dispicable) but at the end of the day, it's happend. They fell and we still stand.

Anyway, back to the topic please.

So by your thinking then, it's perfectly fine and safe for somebody to get a Swastika tattoo

There's a slight difference between a Warhammer 40,000 logo, and an actual Nazi symbol.

I actually saw a guy on the beach the other day with some Nazi rubbish on his shoulder, and I raged, but if I saw that eagle spread over someone's back I'd just think it was awesome.

firstly make sure your design is to size that you take in, it will be a lot easier than trusting them to scale it up or down.
Ask them if the needles have been sterilized etc, ask questions, a good/professional tattooist will welcome questions as it shows you know what your doing, not just spur of the moment don't care job. If they look odd or dont give you a straight answer walk away, what have they got to hide?
Look at their portfolios, go off the work they have put on to bodies not the work they have drawn. A good tattoo will probably set you back about £1-£2 a minute! If its dirt cheap expect to get what you pay for.
Tattoos generally dont cover freckles or scars or moles well so make sure theres non of them where your having it or you wil get holes forming.
People say 'black hurts more' This is a lie, it comes from the fact most outlines are done in black with one needle so take longer to do and have to be gone over, when shading they use multiple needles, the colour does not contribute to pain. It hurts more over bone as the needle can bounce off it if very thin skin or generaly the nerves are closer to the surface layer of skin.
And most important of all! Make sure you want it for life/if you grow out of it its covered up.
People go on about 'oh you have it for life' but as a rule the most naked people ever see me is when swimming, bar the gf lol. So as long as you can cover it your good.
But if some one does see it and ask you about it, if you cant think of a good reason to say why you got it now, imagin how stupid you will sound when your older.

I personally have one tattoo which was a tester for pain, it was a bat but i dont like it and its getting turned into Mohawk from Gremlins 2.
The tattoo it was done in preparation for i still havnt finished perfecting the drawing of and ive been doing it for 3years.

So you can put a lot of planning into it and get something you will be proud of for life, or get something soonish, but make sure you can cover it later :)

Hey,
the most important thing is that you are 100% sure you want it done, if thats the case go for it.

Before you go to your appointment take note of these points:
1. Shower just before you go, if you smell it'll be a major distraction to your tattoo artist.
2. Eat something before you go. Some people become light headed and can even faint (yes i've seen it happen) so having something in your stomach will help. Even small tattoos take a bit of time to do.
3. No alcohol! Alcohol thins the blood, you will bleed easier and take longer to heal.
4. If you wish, take a distraction for yourself (MP3 player). Personally i like to watch it being done :D

I had mine done about a year ago now, unfortunately i don't know any tatooists in your area but when you do find one, ask your tattooist anything your unsure about, doesn't matter what it is. When i had mine stenciled to the arm i told him what i was and wasn't happy with, don't be afraid because after that it's permanent!
Mine took about 14 hours (two 3 hour sessions, one 4 hour session and an hour touch up) I know yours won't take this long, but if you need a break or anything, ask!
When finished your artist will cover the fresh ink to prevent infection, you'll need to keep that on for at least a couple of hours. You'll then need to wash it with warm water and an anti-bacterial soap 3 or 4 times a day for 3 to 4 days. Your tattoo will probably be oozing plasma so you'll need to wash away as much of this as possible, if it drys on the skin surface it'll create scabs. After each wash you will need to apply your choice of ointment, i recommend Bepanthen, does a very good job! You'll only need a very thin layer of ointment.
thats pretty much it, there are plenty of tattoo care sites about to have a look at. Anyway good luck with it mate.
