No, not a GTI but a mildly fettled 1.4 XS. Rebuilt, rejetted Twin Choke Carb, Euro-Spec Rallye Camshaft and a 4-2-1 manifold, all topped off with a lovely leather interior from a 309 goodwood. The close ratio gearbox and twin choke made it feel a bit faster than it really was (I thought this felt quicker than the V8 5 series I occasionally drove after passing). Brilliant car, well looked and so much "nicer" to drive than the GTI. Everything felt lighter, the steering, the clutch, the gear changes were beautiful (rather than the stick in concrete feeling you get in the GTI).
Unfortunately I parked it up 5 months ago when I bought my GTI, and haven't touched it since. Until yesterday when I began gutting it for parts to put in the GTI. A real shame seeing as how it started first time desipte being laid up for all those months it started first time, and that there is literally nothing wrong with it, but the interior is probably worth more than the rest of the car in its current state and a nice GTI is always going to be worth more than a nice XS. I'll probably stick it in the lock up soon to rot
