I may be moving in as a lodger and am unsure how to precede with regarsd to the deposit etc. Should I get some sort of written and signed contract - like a lodgers agreement or something less formal?

If you're making a deposit then it's presumably still required to be placed in a deposit protection scheme by the landlord. I can't see why it would be different if you are a lodger.

If you're going to sign a tenancy agreement, then your deposit will be accepted into a deposit protection scheme (by law).

If you're entering into a more informal agreement (just informally paying the guy cash month by month for letting you stay), then I wouldn't hand over any kind of deposit.

I'm technically a lodger and the landlady said she didn't want to take a deposit as it was fairly pointless from her point of view, we do however have a fairly basic contract setting out the situation and rights/obligations for the parties.

This may not be the ideal basis to proceed from but it suits us fine.
