Hi guys,

Are there any free apps that will check whether or not you have a faulty dvd drive? I think mines on the way out, but I have to be sure :D

I'm sure I've used something in the past for checking, but I can't remember its name...

Cheers!

I'm sure Nero has a facility to check the installed drives , it does tests with disks in the drive , checking reading and writing speeds.

Might not be a complete test but bung in a dual layer DVD that's got 8gb+ of data on it and try copying the data off and see if you get any errors. Assuming you had no errors then download something that will perform a CRC32 checksum on the source and copied files to make sure they are the same. If they match then at least reading is reliable. You should really repeat the above with a few DVDs.

Doing this is a bit kludgy but I've found it to be the best way to test the read capabilities of a DVD-ROM.
