Amazing game. Steam are just SO AWESOME for doing this. Absolutely great for getting Mac users hooked as well as PC players.

Steam's special deals they have every now and again are plain awesome too! I've nabbed so many great games for low prices because of them ;D

Given that its listed as an unofficial mod and doesn't seem to be connected to steam at all, so i would guess its been built from the ground up as a standalone, though i imagine it does use a lot of stuff form the original so...

Portal Prelude needs the full game.

I tried to run it when I had only Portal: The First Slice (which has now been replaced by Portal) and it didn't want to work.

At least now I've got the full Portal game, I can play the Prelude game, too :)

Valve are so awesome. When you compare this sort of story to activision charging $15 for 5 MW2 maps, or EA trying to charge $15 for game demos or $10 for online access on second hand games, you get the reason why I give Valve lots of my hard earned.

Portal is worth twice as much as it normally costs -- it's that good. The fact it's being flogged for quite literally nothing until the 24th is the reason why Valve are the greatest developer on the planet. Valve actually care for their fans, which is more than can be said for the likes of Infinity Ward/Activision, EA, etc.

I'm disappointed Valve now support Mac.

I'm totally against crApple and all that they stand for - locked down systems, over priced yet inferior hardware, dont allow Flash on iDevices, dont allow Flash games/apps that have been converted to Objective C code (what the iDevices use), making developers jump through hoops to get something on there platforms (i know all about this being one), calling Android phones "porn phones" because you get the whole web on them - not just what uncle Jobs allows, and there marketing ads are often just plain lies...

If Steve Jobs had his way, he would not allow pr0n on any device, control what websites you can look at, make everything proprietary, ban Flash, not allow component upgrades, and completely lock you into his system... you would have no choice like the options you get on PC and other OS's/devices. So it's bad that Valve support them as this can give Apple more users.

Not really the thread or forum to say this on though, most of you seem young and couldn't care less until its too late.

I agree that free is awesome, but I certainly wouldn't pay that much for it. Cracking game that took about 1hr to complete, felt like a few training maps for the real game that might come out, or at least towards the end when you break out of training mode. 1hr is not exactly great value for money.

Way to miss the point of the game. And i very much doubt you completed it in an hour. Normal gameplay time is 2-3 hours for a first attempt.
Does the dark humour count for nothing? The amusing storyline? The ending song? The challenges? It was never designed to drag you in for weeks on end.

Got to one bit now (level 9?) that makes the game lag like crazy (too much going on in the level, I suspect). And they expect me to perform some kind of amazing feat of dexterity with my mouse whilst playing at like 5 FPS :p

Suffice to say, I'll wait for Portal 2 :p

If anyone is considering Prelude, let me just say: this game is about reactions and manual dexterity, not problem solving. It's not traditional Portal at all.
