Sorry to hijack the thread but I've been wondering, why don't they make a Passat hatchback? Ford and Vauxhall both have hatchback versions of their models in that part of the market, so why not VW?
Probably because they're German, and in Germany saloons outsell hatchbacks 1,000,000:1

In Germany, finding a Mondeo hatch is impossible, they're either saloons or estates.

They do. It just has a Skoda Superb badge on it. That's actually both a hatchback and a saloon at once, thanks to a bit of cunning engineering.

The 406 is a well screwed together car, certainly better than all the other pugs and citroens of similar vintage I have owned! And the HDI engine is one of the very few common-rail engines that will give miles of trouble free motoring if serviced on time! My mates has 120k and engine sounds very smooth compared to a lot of VAG 1.9 TDI's.

Sounding smooth is a common rail feature. If they sound particularly rough, there's really something wrong. Many VAG TDIs (PD or Pre-PD) sounded like tractors when new.

I have a Bora 1.9tdi 110 (non-PD).

Has 150k on the clock, FSH (all is VW or VAG specialist).

I got it as I just graduated and now doing 90miles a day, and I serviced it when I got it, runs sweet as a nut, gets me really good MPG, and is so much better looking then a mk4 golf (even though it is the same chassis ;) )

It is a bit bland to drive, but its a work horse, and taken nearly all on motorway, so its awesome for what it is used for. Had it 6months now, and going to service it again soon (quite anal about my cars, and try and service them twice a year)

Look out for people chatting crap, they will be like "PD130" when in reality it is a PD100/115 remapped.

Also PD150 have a lot of problems, cam problems and flywheels too, so make sure they have been rectified, or be expecting to pay a big packet.

I would suggest the PD130 for best all round if you want power, I personally wouldn't touch the PD150 (my own preference after reading/friends experiences).

Funny you should say about the PD150 and flywheels, we had one in today for a clutch, needed a flywheel too, sooo much play in it! All I can say is ouch poor sod to the guy that got the bill.

Yep realscot, them and the cams, and not cheap for either is it :( lol

mine is a non-PD, but pulls so well, do 450ish miles a week, did a trip to france in it, never missed a beat. :D

(It is well built too, I am into my "Dubs", this won't be everyones taste, but it handles so well, it is very low, but awesome :D)

Dual Mass on 150's hence it wasn't a pretty bill! They do tend to lunch fly wheels when clutch's go! Even if you get a clutch as soon as it 1st slips your still likley to need a fly.

The one we did yesterday got stuck in the snow and they burned the clutch out totally trying to unstick it. It's been sitting ever since round the back of their house. I think it was almost £1300 for Clutch/flywheel, mot + service. Needed 2 new rear calipers as they were just seized, and no amount of grease would make them behave.
