So recently, I've been starting to get back into PC gaming and what not, because I had to sell my xbox for a little bit of extra cash in University and while I love PC gaming most of my friends are still on xbox.

I finish Uni in March/April'ish and then I'll spare money so I wanted to get myself some new stuff, more specifically new computer stuff, now, here's where I stand in a little bit of a predicament.

Option #1

On one hand I want to get an amazing rig, this would be beneficial for two reasons, it will be able to handle everything I throw at it and it will also be able to play any and every game currently on the market at max detail settings, but once again, on the PC side of things, I don't have many friends who play on the PC so the gaming experience isn't as fun!

Specs are here:

YOUR BASKET
1 x MSI ATI Radeon HD 6970 2048MB Twin Frozr III GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card with FREE Deus Ex PC Game £263.99
1 x Intel Core i5-2500K 3.30GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor - Retail £173.99
1 x Crucial RealSSD M4 128GB 2.5" SATA 6Gb/s Solid State Hard Drive (CT128M4SSD2) £154.99
1 x Asrock Z68 Extreme4 Gen3 Intel Z68 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard £144.98
1 x Corsair Obsidian 650D Gaming Midi Tower - Black £137.99
1 x Razer BlackWidow Ultimate Elite Mechanical Gaming Keyboard £119.99
1 x Corsair Vengeance 1300 Professional Gaming Headset £52.79
1 x Corsair XMS3 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (CMX8GX3M2A1600C9) £38.39
1 x Asus PCE-N15 300Mbps 802.11B/G/N Wireless PCI-E Network Adapter £27.38
1 x Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound (3.5g) £8.99
Total : £1,139.98 (includes shipping : £13.75).

Parts may be subject to change for example the 6970 - 7950 etc.

Now, on this hand I can get the computer, play the latest and greatest and have a good bit of money left over.

------------------------------------------

Option #2

I was looking at the iMac, now because in uni I am studying Computer programming, web development/scripting and graphic design, an iMac would be perfect for me, it's got a lot of power, I could easily upgrade the ram, but the only downside is that because Macs aren't all that well known, I would have to find other means for my gaming.

The iMac I would be going for would be the following:

21.5-inch: 2.7GHz

2.7GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5
1920 x 1080 resolution
4GB (two 2GB) memory
1TB hard drive
AMD Radeon HD 6770M with 512MB

£1249.00 (I can get 15% off because of my HE discount, so essentially this would only cost me £1061).

So as you can see the specs between the two computers are pretty far apart, but because it's on the mac system it will feel as if I've got a beastly machine due to the way Mac processes things and what not, I've been playing around with iMacs in Uni and they are quite nice to use and what not, I really enjoy them.

Going for this option would also mean that I would have to dig into my pockets further to go ahead and buy a new Xbox 360 for my gaming purposes.

This would probably set me back anywhere from £400-600, which is a little bit annoying because doing so would be leaving me with little to no money over the 4 months break that I would have.

Xbox 360 (£200 roughly) + Current games I want to play (BF3/AC:R/FIFA12/MW3, £150-200 roughly) + good gaming headset (£200 roughly), so if I go for the second option it would cost me around £1.6/1.7k, but this route would allow me to play with my friends and what not, but it's just the option do I want to spend all of my money?

--------------------------------------------------

Final verdict?

What do you guys think, have you ever been in a similar situation where you're stuck between two options?

What would you rather do? what do you think would be the more viable option?

(P.S sorry for the long post).

Get your friends to get PCs and get the PC :p

I'm VERY biased, but I'd get the PC. Unless you REALLY love how the Mac looks, the PC seems like the better option. Whether you buy the PC or Mac, you're still stuck with the friends/Xbox problem. Do you already have a monitor for the PC btw?

Yeah man, I've got a nice little Dell IN2020 monitor, it's only 1600x900 sadly, I'd prefer a 1920x1080 resolution, but hey.

And I know, >_<, I need to get my friends to switch. god! friggin' fanboys.
I am edging towards the PC side of things to be honest, I've always been a fan of having more power over anything else.

My PC at the moment though, it feels as if it's been severely bottlenecked as I have a 5400rpm eco friendly hdd. ugh.

In your sig? It's a decent CPU still. Why not get a new case/GPU/SSD for your current rig and get an xbox? An ssd compared to a 5400RPM drive will be amazing!

I'm just one of those types of people that likes to have the latest and greatest really, but that does sound like a good option also.

I may consider that, I would prefer to get all the parts though, love building up new rigs, so much fun. >.<

My budget is £1.9-2000 but, i'd like to have money left over, so that's why I'm looking in the 1-1.1k range.

I've already got the parts mentioned:

PSU = XFX XXX 650w Modular.
SATA Drives = CD/DVD drive & 2TB Samsung Eco Green HDD.
The rest are in my signature.

I don't want to keep my Case, it's only, doesn't provide good enough cable management and it's a little small (Antec 300).

I'm upgrading the RAM from 8gb - 12GB for the sake of it and because, well, it's cheap?
I'll be keeping the 2TB as storage while the SSD would be for O/S, Adobe Suite and other applications, games etc, will not be getting installed on the SSD. (For storage preservation purposes).

Can I be real bore and suggest neither? You note that you had to sell your Xbox to fund your Uni course so one assumes you've not got a big pile of cash burning a hole in your pocket. Your existing rig seems acceptable for gaming (at least to Xbox standards) and will be well overspecced for programming and web design.

I don't wish to offend but I suggest you ask yourself if you really NEED to upgrade. I don't know your full circumstances but with the rig you have already, I'd be prioritising other things.

Just my 2p.

@ip.

To be honest mate, I don't need to upgrade, I guess it's more of one of things, you've got money, you want to get nice things and personally, I'm a bit of gaming nerd, game pretty much in all my spare time, so that's basically the only reason if I'm completely honest.

@stulid.

Thanks for taking the time out of your day to put together a little build for me, I wouldn't go for the i7 over the i5 because well, I wouldn't want to spend that much on a processor, but good god, I didn't realise that is a 6-core processor, wow that's pretty amazing.

Why have you opted for the S3 over the M4, is there a difference? is the M3 better or is that a price thing?

I've already got an a70 air cooler, so I wouldn't go for the Liquid cooling set-up personally.

All the rest is fine though, I will admit.

Its is a 6 core (HEX) CPU, it also has Hyperthreading being a i7, so thats 12 threads it can chew on at once:)

As for the SSD, both are really fast, and nether will be a let down.
