Well if you are upgrading from pre bloomfield or any AMD system, then IB is the way to go.

But if you have a decent i7 system or SB please don't waste your monies.

so the folk upgraded from Q6600 etc etc that's fine.

but from a technological stand point, IB really isn't a big leap forward is it.

Is it worth upgrading from a 955 @ 3.8Ghz to Ivy or sb or wait until Haswell/piledriver ?

Some games are choppy @ 1920x1080 with my 7970 :s

I'd be happy to wait if the next set of chips will be like the sandybridge improvement over previous chips.

Not trying to poop on IvyBridge or anything here just looking for some advise :D

I'm looking to upgrade to SB or IB i5 variants from a Q6600 this week. Now I'm not a massive Overclockers so I would only be looking for 4.2-4.5Ghz over the life of the chip which will be around 4-5 years. Any pointers on which is the best to get? It seems like SB is the best for raw performance with large overclockers yet the IB is better at stock and lower overclockers (which I'm aiming for) with newer tech, power draw and all that type of jazz.

It also doesn't seem like the price gap is that massive with the IB generally costing an extra £20-30 overall depending on what components you use with each chip. Tips and advise would be great :D

Go IB. Simply because you might as well as your not going to be heavily OC'ing.

I should be getting my new Ivy I5 3570k build soon, time to retire my good old Core2 Duo E6600, it has served me well. No plans to clock higher than 4GHz.

Been waiting since November last year to build a new rig and kept putting it off until the next best thing came out. Glad I waited till now because the competition between AMD and nVidia is rife and the IB chips have just come out.

So just ordered a 3570K + Z77 Sabertooth and 16Gb of Sammy Greens...

Upgrading from an AMD 965BE, unfortunately this new build will be used with an HD6850 until some more 680s with customer coolers hit the shelves.

You have to justify that purchase:D

Is he serious?

Hmm, can't decide between the Ivybridge 3570, 3550 or the Sandybridge 2500k....any thoughts?

3570 - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-404-IN

3550 - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-406-IN

2500k - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-360-IN

I guess it comes down to either the 3570 or 3550 since the 2500k is now same price as the 3550.

These gaming benchies show a nice difference between the 2500k and the 3570k.

I chose the 3570K. There's always an element of regret in not getting the top end chip, but the benches Opeth linked are pretty much the story in all of the reviews and show a tiny difference between 3570K and 3770K. £75 doesn't seem anything like worth it. You'd be far better spending that on better memory or graphics card.

Hmm, was going to buy one of these tomorrow but just seen the price has risen already. Unfortunately, competitors sites haven't shifted and now OCUK seem to be the most expensive :(

Might go for the 2500k considering the sub 5% performance increase ;)

It's interesting how those benches linked above show hardly any gaming difference between 3570K and 3770K, yet in 3D Mark 11, quite a bit, particularly physics.

Performance:
i7 3770K - 7007
i5 3570K - 6791

Physics;
i7 3770K - 9869
i5 3570k - 7575
