Aren't Volvo's labour prices ridiculous? May look for an indy around Gloucester.

Look for an idie garage with a proper code reader, the generic hand held ones dont always pick up manufacturer specific codes.

The volvo forum should be able to tell you a local indie, you can probably get the codes read for less than half what volvo will charge, or you may find a friendly member localy who has the right hardware to read codes properly.

Official volvo garages charge silly money for labour, about £80 per hour iirc.

Firstly however I would probably starrt a thread on the forum, in the relevant section, it may well be a known/common issue for that engine... youll certainly get some advise as to what you can check youself to rule certain things out..

Rough idle and high fuel use could be a lot of things :(
GDIs tend to suffer from sooted up intake manifolds/ports (because the fuel bypasses the ports straight into the cylinder) and throttle body so it might be worth having a quick look there.

Just repaired a friends 2001 V40 1.8 with the same symptoms. I simple pulled the coil packs and HT leads out (they have two coil packs which connect directly to the plug and then have two leads which go to the other two plugs), cleaned up the contacts and put it all back together - no more misfire :)

Despite it being a 2004 it is not a modern Volvo, it is one of the very last of the Mitsubishi/Volvo platform cars. It may therefore not have the sort of diagnostic requirements you'd expect from a newer generation 2004 Volvo.

I'll call the independent gain today. He seemed well clued up on the engine as well. Did a search on the garage and could only find one old thread on one of the Volvo forums saying he's excellent.

Fishers Gloucester Volvo Specialists

Considering I'm staying in Gloucester now it's quite handy.

Well the EML came on this morning so I guess there's a code that can be read now which is a good thing. My GF is on her way to Gloucester from Watford right now with my code reader. :) She was coming this way due to going to Bristol tomorrow which is handy. Only problem is the Volvo specialist is only open till 5 so I've no hope of making it after work. Plus it's not open on Saturdays so I may have to go back to Watford and try the one there and see if it's open.

Ah man, what a day. Car dumped all coolant on the way to work. :( Managed to get it to a decent garage without the HG going so a lucky escape. Basically one of the hoses had come away from its mounting which and was resting against a pulley.

Anyway, turns out the fault is a a coil pack, new one should be fitted tomorrow hopefully.

How do you mean?

Initially they disconnected the coilpack and the fault remained hence they suspected it faulty. New one was fitted and no difference so now they have done a compression test to eliminate valves and started looking at fuelling. Seems the injector is getting voltage but isn't pulsing.
