A USB box, containing HDs which easily performs mirror RAID?

I'm after an external device which I can plug in say 2 to 4 hard drives and the box will handle whatever mode of RAID I would like. I'd like to connect to the box via USB (as opposed to a NAS which is ethernet).

Is there anything like this out there?

It sounds like you want a DAS (Direct Attached Storage) box.

They do exist. Try Googling 'USB3 DAS' or similar.

Drobo's are a name which springs to mind for this sort of thing. Can throw in different size hard drives as well if I remember correctly.

This will let you mirror two drives (think they also do a 4-drive version.)
