Upgrade from Dell 2407wfp?

7850 GPU
i5-3570 CPU
main uses: movies, browser, mmo gaming (usually windowed)
budget: £600

I'm not even sure I need an upgrade, but I fancy a 27" 2560x1440 monitor. I've had my dell for nearly ten years and never had a problem with it, it would be nice if the next one was just as reliable.

I read of a few issues on here with the Dell 27 inch monitors?

It depends on that GPU horsepower does it? Most people are now looking at 21:9 ratio and are saying the natural upgrade would be 21:9 in 29" or 34" depending on horsepower. As things stand now you can get the 1440p version for £800 or a 1080p for £300 this week with the AOC.

Maxwell is coming also you will probably want a new gpu soon so it depends on if you want to wait or buy now. A 7850 will struggle big time with 1440p 21:9 though. Personally i would go for the £800 monitor first and play older games and start saving for a midrange maxwell with more vram.

1440p isn't 21:9, it's 2560*1440 = 16:9 (p shouldn't mean an aspect ratio really, but it now does for some weird reason)

However, the point still stands with respect to the graphics power vs resolution. A 7850 is a nice card at 1080p but at 1440p will struggle to push a decent framerate in lots of games. Not really sure about how different games deal with being windowed and how the window size may impact performance.

Edit: I'd disagree about 21:9 being the go-to aspect ratio too, personally I don't have any desire for it and while there have been a couple of big 21:9 releases recently there have also been many more at other aspect ratios.

I had the Dell 2407 WFP-HC for a numbers of years as well (it's still in use now but my Dad has it), I noticed last year the uniformity had began to deteriorate (dark patches in parts of the screen).

For years I've wondered about what screen to get next and TBH there monitor development and innovation haven't exactly set the world alight. Dell's 24" IPS panel had seen incremental improvements but nothing to get excited about, in the end I didn't want to spend a fortune so I took a chance on an Korean Import. I bought a Qnix Evolution 2-DP 2560x1440p matte IPS panel and I'm very, very happy with it (the stand is a bit naff but i've overlooked this minor imperfection).

1440p can be 21:9 or 16:9 because we have 16:9 2560x1440 and 3440x1440 displays.

I agree that 1440p shouldn't literally mean 2560x1440 as all it says is the vertical res & that it's progressive not interlaced, same as 1080p doesn't strictly mean 1920x1080. However, 1440p still does mean that.

QHD (Quad HD), also sometimes advertised as WQHD[29] due to its widescreen shape, or 1440p,[30] is a display resolution of 2560x1440 pixels in a 16:9 aspect ratio.

If you look the LG site the 3440x1440 is also QHD and im guessing progressive signal too so yea confusing. OP is not going to get much of a boost from his old IPS anyways as things aint moved on much.

You are still on 60hz and still under 1000:1 contrast, Hell the U2414Q has 800:1 it seems like a 4K version of 2407WFP.

It's actually worse than that; the 2407WFP is S-PVA and unless it's in a very bad way should still manage better contrast than a current IPS screen.

OP have you looked at the BenQ BL3200PT? It's the only 1440p VA monitor on the market and should be a good upgrade from the 2407 if you're comfortable with a 32" screen.

JARRA!
I've been wanting to ask this question too because I am in the same position. The monitor is so good but I'd like to try 120Hz or 4K but that would mean dropping even more money on upgrades which isn't really an option :'(

Bought this monitor from OcUK and it's been one of my favourite purchases alongside my Z5500's!

It looks good, thanks for that, my one concern was the tiny pixels on a 27 inch, pity OCuk don't have them.

I replaced my 2407 several weeks ago with an AOC Q2770PQU.

These are on today only right now and in a word, DO IT :D

I went from the 2407 to a Dell U2711 and now to the AOC and I totally agree, the AOC is an excellent monitor and would be a worthwhile upgrade from the 2407.
