I am having trouble getting my 6850 working with my MSI 787I motherboard. The mother board is Gen 3 but the GPU is Gen 2.1.

My question is should they work fine together?

When plugged in the mother board doesn't even post.

I read on Wikipedia that it should be backwards compatible?

It is backwards compatible, so should work just fine. Have you got the power leads plugged into the 6850? Should be just a single 6 pin.

yes, I do.

I thought the power supply was too low so swapped out the PSU but still no joy.

Have a 6850 working fine with H97 motherboard that has Gen 3 PCIE.

Had a look in BIOS to check options, but not found anything related to PCIE slot. The CPU graphics are disabled.

do CPU graphics need to be disabled@?

Was just looking for option to check it was disabled and gave up trying to find it, so tested with DVI cable using onboard port and it is disabled on my system.

Setting I did find included:
  • Primary Graphics Adapter - set to PCI Express (choice onboard or PCIE)
  • PCIE1 Link Speed - set to Auto (choice 1, 2, 3, auto)
  • IGPU Multi-Monitor - set to disabled

I have Fast boot disabled, which was news to me as it boots very quickly.
