Hey guys I'm looking to upgrade from my I7 930 @ 4.2ghz I'm currently considering the 5820k or the 4790k. I'll be using my rig for gaming and some rendering to be honest I'm looking for an excuse to get the 5820k lol. But I do have a little voice saying do you really need 6 cores? I think I'm asking is it worth the extra cost for DDR 4 and future proofing?

Also you can get a Xeon x5650 for £60 or (x5660, x5670) for a little more.
You can OC the x5650 to around 4.2-4.4GHz and get the same performance like the 5820K (at stock of course)

I'm in the same situation, I have a 920 @ 4.4 and really struggling to hold off an upgrade even though it does it's job perfectly fine with no bottlenecks etc

I'm trying my best to hold out for broadwell then make the jump.

if your board allows then go xeon 6 core. i had l5369 in place of 930. plenty power at 3.2 ghz despite the handicap of a low multiplier. the x5650 has a higher multiplier and should clock much higher. bargain 6 core upgrade. i wish i hadn't let mine go.

I'd say 5650 as well. The only reason to go beyond that is for things like SATAe and M.2, but there aren't many drives yet anyway. 5650 will do until there is something more inspiring about.
