Hi Guys,

Please can you give my spec a once over before I order? It's replacing a computer from 2008 (!) that's used as a general-purpose PC and for some gaming every now and then. Ideally I'd like this one to last another six years. There isn't really any cost pressure on the budget, but I'd like to get value for money. Something like the below seems to be the sweet spot. My main question is which processor to go for - is the i5 really worth the extra £100? My current PC has an old Core 2 E8400 which has aged well with some overclocking, so something similar from this generation is appealing. Is it worth spending some more on a proper cooler?

CPU: Pentium G3258 (£54.38) or i4690k (£179)
RAM: TeamGroup Xtreem LV "Frost Edition" 8GB (£59.99)
Mobo: Gigabyte Z97P-D3 (£57.90)
GFX: SAPPHIRE AMD R9 280 (£139)
HDD: Crucial CT256MX100SSD1 256GB MX100 (£79.00)
PSU: SuperFlower Golden Green HX 550W (£52.99)

Total £440/£560

Already own:

Windows 7
Antec Three Hundred case
DVD drive
Dell 30" 3007WFP monitor (I'm not too fussed about 2560x1600 gaming though)

Any suggestions or does the above look ok?

Thanks!

Means that the ram will not fit when you put the Cpu cooler on the board, Get low profile RAM
Ram
CPU cooler maybe something like This
Or arctic cooler freezer 13

Psu should be fine, but because you are getting 280 you might consider getting a stronger psu so in future if you decide you want to add another card it will be flawless.
PSU

Definitely get the i5 over the Pentium... if you want it to last you don't want to buy stuff that is rubbish now...it will be painful in 5 years...

ALSOOOO mega jealous about your case... I used to have one and sold it...biggest mistake ever !
