At the moment I have a BenQ XL2730Z 144Hz Freesync monitor and while 144Hz and 1440P together are nice I wouldn't mind getting G-Sync.

I have a Freesync monitor due to previously owning a Fury X but it decided to take a pee out of one of it's tubes inside my case breaking my PSU in the process so I got my PSU replaced free of charge and got my Fury X replaced with a 980 Ti as Fury X stock is rarer than Miley Cyrus with clothes on.

So my question is this, Is a 980 Ti overkill for 1080P ? I ask as I could sell this current monitor and buy a G-Sync monitor with the proceeds, I can't afford right now to go up to anything else due to very limited funds.

Thoughts ?

no such thing as overkill but I would definitely going fo g sync the only problem is you wont need it at 1080 so would be better getting a 1440p g sync screen

My Thoughts are, at 1080p you are always gonna have enough grunt with a 980ti. It is not like you are going sli for 1080p, that would be overkill.

You really want to go to a lower res monitor though?

I recently upgraded to a 980ti, currently on 1080p monitor, as you'd expect it eats games at that resolution for breakfast.

Next month I'll probably treat myself to the Asus 27" G sync 144hz ROG monitor :).

I have a 980ti with Gsync 1080p.

A 1440p screen would be ideal for this, but the way I see it, I can max out games for a while and not have to worry about dropping settings.

Higher FPS the better so it's not overkill for 144hz, Even a 980ti can't get 144fps in each and every game.

Thanks all for the answers :)

Previous to owning the Fury X I did have a 980 non Ti and also had the ROG Swift and I went through 5 of them each with dead pixels, Stuck pixels, Flickering, Fuzzy screen, Broken G-Sync unit so needless to say I do not trust Asus when it comes to monitors anymore :p

Nowhere close to being overkill. I'm getting 70-80 fps in forests in Witcher 3, with everything except Hairworks AA maxed; in urban areas the average is just under 100.

I can't stand low fps so a bit vary about moving up to a higher resolution.

I think witcher 3 and GTA V have really pushed current gen cards, which is good i guess :)

If you're talking 60 fps, it's not overkill, it's enough for more than a year. If you're talking over 60, then it isn't even enough. And things aren't getting better with time's passing either, so..

I'd rather know the fps are comfortably above 60 all the time than push higher resolution and have it drop. As others have said that card will be good to go for 1080p for ages yet.

You might one day want to add two more of those benq screens one day for a triple set up. a 980ti would run them all at decent levels well above 60fps. If you get a 1440p monitor you kinda are going down a dead end cause it will be a long time till you can run three on a single card.

I am close to dropping a pretty penny on SLI 980tis for 1080p screens.

I will be using DSR however and for racing games - triple screen gameplay. :)

Go for it

980ti is not overkill for 1080p, you can also run a lot of games with DSR, some games you still cannot max every setting and get 60+fps 100% of the time at 1080p.

GTA V
Far cry 4
Witcher 3
project cars

There are some games off my head that I cannot 100% max at 60+ fps at 1080p

Certainly not overkill.. as an owner of the 980ti i can say it cannot completely max out GTA 5/Witcher 3 nor far cry 4 and maintain stable 60 fps.. so if your picky about your minimum fps even in the 99th percentile 1 is certainly not overkill.
