Hi guys,

Been out of touch for a long time and my PC is getting on for about 5 years old now (i5-3570k, 8GB RAM, 7850 & 1080p 120hz monitor).
So I may be able to cobble together £200 to put towards an upgrade and I'm guessing the graphics is the place that will make the most difference.
I'm most likely to be using for FPS games and some movies and the like.

Any cards you would go for around that price?

Cheers.

RX480 8GB reference 219£
but i would suggest an AIB like sapphire Nitro 249£ which is more expensive but worth the extra money.
you can also wait for the 4GB version of the RX480 should be around 200£ for the nitro AIB, or the RX470 starting at 150£ they should be released by the end of the month.

RX 480 or GTX 960

edit: the used card market is VERY cheap due to the aforementioned cards. Consider getting a deal there instead.

Well considering the RX 480 is nearly twice as fast as the GTX 960, I think we can rule out the 960.

960 has always been a terrible card for the money, and it's worse than ever now.

Wait for the custom cooler RX480s or any 390X offers.
There were many 390x for 250 but sold out in matter of minutes.

Nvidia has nothing worth mentioning in that price bracket.

Rx480 if your wanting cheap and it should drive 1080p reasonably well. Just the lack of AIB cards and your stuck with the ref jet engine blower at the minute.

if your looking to spend a little more I'd go 980Ti. Going quite cheap now at about £350 for a nice model.

+1 rx480 - should be 2-3x the performance of the 7850 in most things.

don't be fooled by cheap 3gb 1060's when they come out next week as they are 10-20% less performant than the more expensive 6gb models due to being a cut-down chip before any ram/clock-speed differences.

If you see a 4gb rx480 you could go for that at around the £180 mark and it should be fine for 1080p but might struggle a little at higher res in the future - though the compression technology in the amd driver minimises the effects of that quite well - the 8gb rx480 is the same performance but with more ram and faster ram too so it works out as a slightly higher performance than the 4gb model.

Cheers for the replies lads.

I can afford to wait 2-3 weeks not in a hurry, so going on what I've read from you I'll check the reviews for the 1060 and keep an eye on offers for the 480 / 390x.

rx 480 would get my vote, a lot more future proof than other cards around its price range.

impressed with mine and came from a pre overclocked 270x :)

edit : you could wait and see how the 1060 and 470 turn out one thing to consider though is amd have an advantage with their hardware async eg doom running vulkan which uses async computing as does dx12 and gives massive gains to amd cards.

i believe the frostbite engine is been updated to support they features as well with the upcoming bf1 :)
