I don't understand. You don't have funds to remap your current car but can afford to drop £12k+ on a new car...

Ive seen lots of cars at the 8-10k pricepoint. My cupra is worth 8 what I am saying is I dont have 1k to drop on an exhaust.

Also another option is the a3 3.2 quattro which are very cheap compared to r32

Cost to change will still be 2-3k for a semi decent example. 8k S3 will be scraping the barrel. Nicer examples start from £12k.

This is what I found. There is a pretty nice S3 close to me, although it has just broken the 100k mark, it's a one owner, FASH, well looked after example. It's £10k. If you want lower miles than 100k, then the price goes up (obviously).

There is also a 60k-ish R32 (2008) local that is also around £10k. But it doesn't have leather or nav, and is 5 door (I prefer 3 door on the Golf, and 5 door on the S3). R32's and S3's seem to be roughly equivalent values. ED30's appear a couple k's cheaper, and the GTI's the same difference again.

To be honest, at this end of the market, mileage is not so much a concern to me. The ED30 I should be picking up this week has 97k on it. But it was easily the cleanest mk5 I have seen in my searches.

That's the first I have heard that standard 8p s3s were close to 300 from the factory.
Mine was certainly closer to 265 on 2 different rolling roads.

I did manage to hit about 290 with a standard map but only after fitting CAI, exhaust, cat, IC, rs4 valve, also had water meth kit fitted.

Stage 1 with a CAI got me about 310bhp or so.

Really? There's loads on the web, here's one example.

Very rare the 8P S3 was actually 265bhp, most were close to 290-300. A remap would send it to 350-360 easily.

So "most were close to 290 to 300"

Quotes a thread where one hits 280 and the dyno operator comments it's the most powerful stock S3 he's ever seen on the rollers.

As for the remap comments, surprising the likes of Revo don't claim 350bhp, they're obviously short selling by 40 to 50bhp because...?
