So my lad wants to upgrade his now very aged PC (E6300, 2GB, Asus P5N). There's a 600w PSU a R7950 GPU and he games at 1080p. I'm thinking his best upgrade path is a new mobo, cpu and memory. He's not into overclocking (I've tried to educate him on this lol), he's purely a gamer and that's pretty much all he wants it for.

So he's after this upgrade for Xmas and I'll budget him circa £400 for for this. I was thinking along the lines of a an Asus 170 aura, i5 6500/6600 and 16gb of ram. Thoughts on this? Any better configurations?

I'd not discount the i3 at this budget. Under-rated for games I think and does well at 1080p.

Take the RAM down to 8gb (it'll under-clock to 2133 with the motherboard though) and suddenly you can afford a new GPU too :)

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £408.42
(includes shipping: £10.50)

If you could stretch the £400 a little bit more then 16gb is do-able.
