Tonsils should they stay or should they go.

Sorry to hear about your Mum :(

Asothers have said, it's usually 5-6 times a year that the NHS will look at removing them. I've had tonsillitis a couple of times recently, one of which I was really struggling to breathe - ended up calling 111 at 4 am.

My daughter is 3 1/2 and she gets it quite frequently - 3 times in the last 4 months and a few times previous to that. We're waiting for an ENT appointment to discuss as even when she doesn't have it, her tonsils are, to quote the last GP who saw then "Wow huge!".

You're probably that bit more run down at the moment due to life in general - give it a while I guess and see if it returns but keep the Docs involved all the time.

Good luck :)

I had tonsillitis twice in around 6 months. I thought I had it for a 3rd time, though it was glandular fever! It knocked me for 6, didn't eat solids for about 10 days, was kept on mushy food in hospital on a saline drip. I could only describe glandular fever as an angry tonsillitis. After that, i still wasn't encouraged to have my tonsils removes.

I had chronic tonsillitis growing up to the point where it felt like I was constantly on penicillin, the GP just told me i'd grow out of it. I must've suffered from it 4/5 times a year at a minimum.

When I got to 15 they sent me to see a specialist who took 30 seconds and said 'they're coming out'. The operation wasn't pleasant, i'm under the impression the older you are the worse the recovery is. Yeah, it wasn't good.

Get them out imo, i've had a sore throat since but only as part of a cold. Nothing like the good ol' eating glass feeling from Tonsillitis.

Edit: Sorry to hear about your Mum :(

Had mine done in December 1997 (I was 10) due to constant bouts of tonsillitis. No issues with it. I used to get night nosebleeds quite regularly and since I had my tonsils out I've never had another nose bleed (not even from footballs in the face).

Had mine out when I was about 35, after getting tonsillitis 2-3 times a year since I was a kid. For me it was full on 103/104 temperature, vomiting (which often required an injection to stop), inability to hold down any food or water, etc. A few days of being sick and a few days of antibiotics meant recovery was at least a week.

If you're getting regularly sick, then take them out. If you don't grow out of it by your mid-20's it's only going to get worse.

Just out of curiosity...do u have a cat or dog ?

I had tonsilitis for 17 years...4,5 even 10 times a year. Specialist wouldnt remove them as i was so small...and i was eventually sent to a "real" specialist who actually realised what was causing it. He asked me about diet, did we live in mouldy house..and what pets we had etc.

Needless to say ...mum and dad got rid of said cat...we had cats for all my life.

Tonsilitis went away within a few weeks and only time i get scratchy throats or it flares up is in peoples houses with cats or massive amounts of dog hair. If im near a cat for any length of time it causes the tonsilitis.

And before you say ... no thats just a bad cat allergy....believe me its not

Personally I was in the same boat as you, 3-4 times a year I got a throat infection, it was hell.

I got told by my dentist to use toothpaste called Euthymol morning and night and since then (6 years?) I have had only a single infection and my tonsil stones/bad breath disappeared completely.

Its honestly changed my life and it was such a simple change.

They aren't so quick to remove things these days. They won't even remove wisdom teeth unless they are causing major issues that can't be corrected by a dentist.

After suffering for the last 15 years with 6-8 cases a year and since Feb 16 I've had 7 cases along side 2 999 calls due to closing airways I've finally had a date come through for the removal. 9th Feb!

Doc: Just need to take a quick look at your tonsils.
Me: Ok
Doc: Say aaaaaahhhhhh
Doc: OMG they are huge!
Me: Gulp! Yes i know.
Doc: Best get these out sharpish.

Not looking forward to the Op but having had plenty of generals before i know what to expect. That lovely cold, spaced out feeling, normally get to 5 out of 10 counting down :D

Edit: I'm 30.
