Thinking about it from the environmental side of things too, while Nvidia seem to making improvements (link is now outdated) http://www.nvidia.co.uk/object/gcr-environment.html it seems utterly irresponsible to manufacture something with the intended lifespan we see.

Again, GPU's will still work long after their heyday but Nvidia know fine well 3 or so years down the line a GTX780 for example is likely to be no longer be fit for purpose, in comparison to recent standards.

As much as I like Nvidia products they really are a shower of absolute *******'s in regards to business practice. Just like Apple really.

Unless the enthusiast market are willing to acknowledge and boycott Nvidia on mass - which is unlikely, things aren't going to change anytime soon.

How would that work exactly? NVidia make the 1080 Ti (let's leave Titan alone for now) and it's the quickest card out there. It can play most modern games at 4k at high/ultra settings and on a game 3 years old? I doubt there's anything that old it can't max out. But how are NVidia meant to maintain that level of performance as game developers make more and more demanding games? Are you suggesting that NVidia find a way of making card increase its performance over time? Or do you mean they should make a more environmentally conscious card?

Because like you say, the card will work for a long time. You can use a graphics card for years and years if you're willing to drop the resolution or lower detail settings etc. Unless I've completely missed the point you're making in which case apologies.

I'm not saying that, I don't think every 10 years would be enough to keep up with the development of other technology.

What would be nice would be a standardised PCB design to allow drop in upgrades. Is there any reason why the GPU core couldn't be socketed or the VRAM couldn't use a socket. It would cut out a lot of waste + troubleshooting and replacing parts would be so much easier. Especially in comparison to sending back the full card as a result of one faulty component. Sometimes something as simple as a fan bearing going means waiting weeks to get a replacement. Seems a bit needless really..

Or maybe a mail in scheme for old hardware. Nvidia take your old card back, are obliged to recycle what they can and issue a discount voucher on a new card.

One thing for sure, corporate giants showing the extreme side of capitalism such as Nvidia should be given a much tougher time as opposed to complatent fan boyism we know so well as enthusiasts.

The 3.5GB 970 was the perfect example. Nvidia were busted and what do OCD enthusiasts do, upgrade to a 980 instead xD

If people weren't so frighteningly daft "it's my money and I'll choose how I'll spend it" the famous line to undermine everything, this could be a good laugh for everyone at Nvidia's expense.

So I was dipping in and out of other things when writing my first reply and you've covered most of the points. I can see the appeal in making a graphics card effectively a mini PC (mainboard, GPU, memory) but like you I don't know how feasible it is. When AMD and Intel release a new generation of CPU it releases a new chipset that requires a new motherboard most of the time. Now obviously each chipset supports multiple generations of CPU's so there's an argument that can be made why can't we do that at a graphics card level, mainly when a generation refreshes. I don't know however how fundamentally the traces on the card itself as well as the interplay with the cards RAM and as well as the power delivery systems. Graphics cards are tremendously complex peices of silicon so there's a decent chance making them upgrade-able is a very difficult process.

The recycle scheme is certainly a great idea.

How much of a performance difference would I expect to see between the Aorus and Aorus Xtreme? Wondering if the slight difference in MHz would provide a noticeable difference when gaming on a PG279Q at 144Hz. If it isn't then seems like the cheaper Aorus would be better value.

Already have the Zotac 1080 Ti AMP Extreme on pre-order, but I'm feeling a little impatient :p

A bit of both really. Maybe not increase its performance over time as I don't see how this would be possible without a miracle breakthrough in driver design or drop in upgrades as mentioned.

Developers can only develop for technology which exists, therefor manufacturers have control of the direction of game development.

It would just be nice to know in acknowledgment and thanks to your investment in Nvidia's share value, a shiny expensive new top of the line GPU won't be made obsolete by a much more power efficient card less than a year down the line. In this context, are yearly refreshes too frequent? From the perspective of demand is it really needed, or is it purely just a way to maximise profits?

Sure development is good for all of us and it pushes things forward but really, are drip fed gradual improvements a good thing for anyone but Nvidia? I would have to say no.

Would be good to know a bit more about the possibility of upgradable GPU design. I suppose without being a circuit design specialist it'll be impossible to find or translate the answer something which makes sense lol.

Saying that, surely when considering GPU's in slave to a CPU, it must be possible.

Not much to be honest, just Gigabyte binning the best chip to make sure it hits that number

Both have the exact same cooling so should with some luck over clock to the same levels as the extreme version

I think it would be nice if nvidia and all resellers offered a trade deal on old cards so you could stay in the game without investing too much. Nvidia and the resellers could then sell those cards on with a limited warranty. When you are paying near on a grand for a new top of the range card this could work for both customer and seller. I'd even go as far as saying there is a gap in the market for it OCUK ;)

That would work for me, I buy 2 high end gpu's a year (regular and ti version). I do still get good prices for the previous cards I sell, as they are still quite current. Upgrading regularly is not as expensive as you think if you do it right.]
I also had a Titan X Maxwell for 18 months that I sold for nearly £800 which was a win for me.

@Gibbo Any word on the Zotac Extreme AMPs? Still showing pre-order on the site but the date has now gone.
And the non-extreme while we are talking about the Zotacs, please.

@Gibbo I'm disappointed by the absolute lack of information on these pre-orders. Other sites are now showing a Friday stock date. If they know, why don't you? And why isn't that information being passed on? I can appreciate you are unable to control when it gets delivered, but you can control how the information - or lack of it - is presented to us, the customer. I came to OC as I'd made a decision to start supporting dedicated retailers like yourselves, rather than just go with Amazon. I'm really starting to regret that right now.

Looks like the non-extreme's are now available on the site. Still waiting on the extreme though! Come on, Zotac!

Got the following from CS today about the Extreme AMP's:

Unfortuantely not no, we have already had a small delivery of these cards already however it wasn't enough to fulfill all of the preorders so we hoping for more to start coming in soon now so that we can get all the preorders shipped.

I've asked if there's a rough date.

I do just read the right threads and I'm out of office all week travelling so getting data connections is not always easiest when your in middle of nowhere or in factories where phones are prohibited.

I've made several comments on AMP Extreme in 1080Ti thread, 15 arrived so far and shipped and 20 more due mid next week.

Just read your post re. the Zotac Extreme so that's good news you're able to clear the back orders with the stock you're getting. Hadn't been reading that thread because it's so massive but given your comment I decided to check it out.
