Can anyone help me identify and diagnose what services are causing the OS to hang like this?

can you boot in to safe mode?
If so once in there hold windows key and press R then type in msconfig.
select diagnostic startup and restart the PC, this will load the minimum the PC needs to boot and see if that allows you in to windows.
you could always check the startup tab as this displays everything that starts with the PC
