Do you always go with the cheapest insurance quote?

So it's that time of year again and time to renew the insurance, I haven't changed in ages as Elephant kept coming up competitive. However I have just done a quote that's coming up a good couple of hundred quid less and has got me thinking.

Do you always just choose the cheapest quote you are given or do you look for specific things or have preferred insurers?

No. I stayed with Direct Line last year, who were a little more expensive than another quote. However, they don't charge for amended details like change of address. I knew I was going to be doing so, so it worked out cheaper in the long run.

I usually avoid the big insurers because they are mostly terrible AND more expensive. I go through a performance car insurance broker/specialist as I always get a better deal. Theres a few that I switch between depending on who has the best price at the time.

Always the cheapest although now in my 30s my insurance is so cheap that I do not take much time over renewals. I simply accepted my online renewal with Aviva recently as it's at a price that I can't imagine would be any different anywhere else.

Back in my teens and then 20s there were savings to be had and therefore I used to take time over it.

i go for the cheapest that is a well known reputable name.

one year i went with a company i didn't know much about and they charged you £100-£200 to change details.

first thing first, they got the model of my car wrong. even though I typed the regi in, etc. so £200 to change that after i noticed 2 months later down the line. then i moved house and again another £200 bill.

had i went with a more reputable big name. i imagine they would have done the first one for free as it was their error. the second would have cost £100 max. so i lost out on £300 trying to save £20.

Yes, the chance of using your insurance is pretty low and I'm willing to risk hassle if I need to interact with them. By cheaper it would have to be a hundred cheaper to move though

I'll look at the cheapest quotes and have a look at what each one offers. When you are shopping for cheap all reviews are going to be terrible so I also try and pick the least poorly rated company :p

I've never found that I get quoted notably cheaper from the "no name" companies than I do from the big ones. I'm with AXA who were the 3rd cheapest quote (less than £20 different) from the cheapest who I'd never heard of.

The wife is with Admiral for much the same reasons and figures.

I've been with Sheilas Wheels for the last 2 or 3 years, partly because they have been really cheap for me and partly because they include £300 of handbag cover for free.

I go for the cheapest one I've actually heard of!

But I've never seen more than £30 saving going for the cheaper noname insurer, I'd likely risk it if there were 200+ savings to be made.

In the last 8 years i've never once contacted another insurance company to shop around. I let my renewal come through, phone them to tell them no, fabricate a story that I've already had other quotes, they always go away for 5 minutes, come back and match or better the fabricated quote.

This year the renewal was 530. I paid 330
