As per my post in the BMW owners thread, I'm buying this next week when I'm home from Cyprus.

It's a 2000 BMW 735i, an old car which is costing me £6495, it's this price because of its condition and history and it's from a classic car dealer.

I'm not looking to debate the rights and wrongs of my choice and decision - I'm mad is the concensus im sure! , it's what I want and have scoured more e38's (from sub £1k to over £13k) over the years and this one finally fits my requirements.

What I want to know is what's my best option for getting an agreed value insurance policy for it?

I know such options exist, I had my second RS Turbo on an agreed value policy years back and when it got written off after being stolen I got a far better price than they then went for because of the agreed value based upon its pre theft condition.

I don't want a classic car policy (I think) because it'll be more or less in daily use albeit with relatively low mileage (ballpark 8k p/a at most, I have use of other cars) but I would like it to have an agreed value because it's clearly not an average car of its age and in the unfortunate event of a loss, I'd like something back that reflects this, I don't expect the full purchase price but would like some kind of agreed value.

What's my best option?

I'm in no great rush, the cars mine (deposit paid) and I'm most likely going to collect it the weekend after next - I'm organising a private plate to go onto it - suggestions appreciated, do I go with regular insurers or would a more specialist broker be my best route?

Might be worth trying Adrian Flux. Pretty sure they'll add an agreed valuation on to any policy if you send them 7 high quality photos and pay the £15 admin fee.

As for the car it still represents good value in my eyes. Yes it is 17 years old but it looks mint and only has 56k on it. Take the age out of the equation and look at what £6.5k buys you in mint condition with that mileage and you get a long list of pretty generic stuff.

I'm glad you've finally got your dream E38, you've been lusting after another one for what seems like forever!

Looks lovely!
I've not quite got it yet mate, paid a £1k deposit from Cyprus whilst on a family break! But, it's by far the best I've seen - and I've lost count of how many I've seen - so long as the viewing and drive matches the photos on my return, it'll be mine and, I can't wait!

I have my Scorpio Cosworth (Y reg) on a agreed value policy with Sureterm Direct (same people I insure my Westfield with) - only put the price up by £15 (£141 to £156). That is only 3k a year though.

The underwriter is Highway.

Terrific, just the answer I was after, I'll be making some (somewhat long distance) calls Tomorrow, thanks.

Picked it up on Saturday from KGF, the car is in superb condition- far better in the flesh than the photos, much to my amazement! - drives beautifully without squeaks, rattles or any knocks.

The service file is incredible, 31 visits to the same BMW dealer over its life, and a one off to a different BMW dealer with all invoices and a print out from BMW confirming each and every visit, it's had most issues addressed, including new fuel tank, suspension front & rear (rear is self levelling) new battery, starter, water pump, thermostat, brakes all round to name just some, hopefully it should be kind to me given a lot of the work was within the last three years during which time it's covered less than 5k miles.

Got a fully comp policy from Adrian Flux , £580 including breakdown cover, protected NBC and key cover for me and my other half also - crucially- an agreed value of £6.5k,they work with KGF so verifying its condition and value "won't be an issue" which was nice to hear, mileage is limited to 7.5k p/a which won't be an issue.

Incidentally Lancaster insurance wanted £1100 to cover it, without an agreed value and the £580 premium is less than I pay currently for my £800 1999 Volvo V70 diesel with 183k on the clock - bearing in mind the BMW is a 3.5 V8 petrol- bizarre.

I'll post some more pictures later but I'd be hard pressed to better the ones taken by the dealer.

Absolutely delighted with it.
