My Galaxy 6 recently had a software update applied.
So it's running Android 7.0, 1 May 2017 Security Patch level

I am now constantly getting the "Device Maintenance" pop up with the message "Fix performance issues".
When I tap on this I get the following:

Close apps causing performance issues?

com.google.android.gm is causing performance issues that could drain your battery or cause other apps to run slowly.
Cancel Close App

Whichever I chose, give it maybe 30 minutes or an hour and I'll get the same pop-up. Another day I won't see it at all, but I usually see this daily and quite often multiple times a day.
All started after the latest update, which I will assume was the May security patch.

Anyone have any ideas what might be occurring?

Looks like I'm going to have to do a reset.
Cannot remove the Gmail app - I can remove all the updates for the app, which I've done. Also cleared all the cache for it etc.
However still receiving the pop-up on a regular basis.
Meh :)
