Transferring apps when backing up and restoring iPad

im about to backup my iPad and restore it on my new iPad, I just wanted to double check the app side of things.

I'm currently on a connection with very limited bandwidth, so I want to make sure all my apps are included in the backup and restore as I can't re-download them.

I remember doing this before and iTunes (or me!) totally ballsed up and it decided to restore EVERY app I've ever downloaded... regardless of whether or not it was installed during the backup  Also most of them got stuck on "preparing for download" for weeks afterwards.

Is the proper way of achieving this, just a case of:

1) Ensure the apps you want backed up, are installed prior to the backup (duh)
2) In iTunes, go to File > Devices > Transfer purchases from iPad
3) Do a standard local iTunes backup
4) Restore the backup
5) Transfer the apps back by dragging and dropping in iTunes?

Or am I missing something?

Thanks :D

Well after some further investigation, it appears that since iOS 9 and the introduction of "app thinning", iTunes won't do this anymore as it's not possible.

Oh well, time to borrow my friends connection while I redownload all my apps then!
