Intel are bringing server to desktop it seems, though I cannot recommend these for gaming, but anyone looking for an absolute beast of a desktop / workstation with huge core count, Intel now have the answer:

For the price of the Core i9-7960X I could get a Threadripper 1950x, Motherboard and 16GB of 3200mhz RAM and still have change for a weekly food shop and some beers.

How much will it beat a threadripper by?

Got nothing more than a casual affirmative here. After all wouldn't you be surprised if it didn't beat TR at something?

Besides there are variations in comparisons. Popular ones seem to be equal cores and equal pricing.

I'm interested to see how that low base clock works out personally. TR is after all a couple of ryzens glued together and it didn't lose clockspeed.
