Hey All,

Currently running a old i7 920 system, 8gb ram, p6t motherboard. Been brilliant over the years, but is finally starting to feel a little slow and old, overclocks failing more, new games getting slower
I currently have SSds and a Radeon r9 290x 8gb, which i believe will be good at the mo?

Its been a long time since my last delve into pc components. Its a different world now!

Looking for advice on what i should look at getting, Ideally sticking below £500 if thats possible.
Mostly for gaming, i play a lot of Total War!
Video editing speed would be nice, but not a priority.

Cheers!

Just been reading, nice to see AMD put something out to rival intel! It's been a while since I have seen that.

If amd is the best choice I have no problem with that

Oh Canada!
You need CPU/RAM/MOBO as DDR3 is no longer what's used in modern systems. Maybe a Ryzen 5 1600, B-350-Strix and 2X8GB of DDR4 3000?
Will definitely be better than your 1st gen i7.

When you get the chance upgrade that 290X as its no longer an impressive card. Your SSDs can be used until they burn out.

PSU you might want to swap if its from 2008 like your CPU. Very few PSUs are still in good shape after 10 years.

Cheers, i will look at the ryzen setups, they seem to be well recommended at the moment
the graphics upgrade may need to wait 6 months, but will look into that at some point!
Psu is about 2-3 years old, Silverstone SST-ST60F-ES, hoping that will be good enough still for a while?

PSU should do you well

Two most common options for you
Best board out there with Ryzen 5 1600 6 core 12 threads

Or best budget board that clocks well and have handles 3200 ram max , with Ryzen 7 1700 8 core 12 threads

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £1,127.34
(includes shipping: £11.10)

Same ram

If pure games , 1600... If your streaming or doing heavy CPU work 1700

Both roughly same price

Want cheaper , 1400 4/8 threads with the gaming 3

Ok cheers,
Regarding the FrostFlow cooler,
I have a bitfonix Radier case which has space on the top of the case for a 200mm fan.
Would that cooler bit to big for that space, or does it mount somewhere else?

you might struggle fitting that cooler in to that case, personally i dont think its gonna, you may need to invest in a new case to accommodate it.

Only way i can think of is to get a 120mm cooler and use it to exhaust from the rear

240 AIO for 1700 or a damn good air cooler . Believe 1600 should be good as only need 1.33v to hot 3.8Ghz - least with mine anyways and a few others

The front can have 2x 120mm fans but you might have to lose the HDD cage
