Hi Everyone,

Apologies if this has been posted before, been searching around but struggling to find a clear answer!

Basically looking to replace my gaming laptop (ASUS ROG G750JH). Price-wise i have been looking at around (but not limited to) £1600. It seems at this price point the best GPU is the GTX 1070? The laptops I have seen in and around that price are:

Alienware 15 R3 - £1649
15 in, FHD
i7 - 7700HQ
GTX 1070
8gb Ram
1TB HDD

HP Omen AN19NA - £1649 (currently on offer, down from £1799)
17 in, FHD, G-SYNC
i7 - 7700HQ
GTX 1070
8gb Ram
256 SSD + 1TB HDD

Spec-wise the HP would appear to have a clear advantage (being 17 inches as well) but I've never really looked into HP laptops before. Anyone have any thoughts on the above or potentially some other laptops I have missed?

Would appreciate any feedback!

Moogleys on here has an Omen. It seems to me the Alienware laptops are so overpriced for what they give you. Why this is, I don't know. Maybe paying for the name. I don't know whether they have better cooling or something.

I'm waiting for the HP Omen 1060 to come back in stock, then I will order one. I like the idea of having a Gsync screen.

I bought the omen 17 with the 1060 received it yesterday. So far seems a lovely laptop.. one gripe is the fans are pretty loud. Although screen is beautiful

Hmm, that doesn't sound ideal. So much for Max Q technology. :D I don't think it would bother me. The PC I'm using currently has 5x80mm fans and sounds like a jumbo jet!

I thought that the Omens had lower spec versions of the GTX1070?

Sale gone on Alienware for 12% off. Alienware 15 now £1,451 and the Alienware 17 (GX1080) is £1803.

Even without g sync surely still going to be decent? Any thoughts on whether the GTX1080 is worth the extra £400?

Cheers

A 1080 for a 1080p60 screen? That’s surely overkill. Or is it a 4K or 120Hz screen?

The HPs are using Max Q now yes which is about 5-10% lower FPS. Seems like HP are really trying to push their Omens now, I’ve seen adverts everywhere online for them. For what you get, they are very reasonable prices, too.

The 4K screens are an extra £300 (still no gysnc) ... Was thinking future-proof wise so surely the 1080 would be good for a considerable amount of time?

The Alienware 17 with QHD, Gsync, 7700k, 1070 is the same price. Would the lower GPU & processor be worth it for the QHD & gsync?

Cheers

Having looked a bit more into it and seeing some videos, definitely feels like Gsync is the way to go!

Anyone got a 1070 running at 1440p? As scaling back down to 1080p in the future isn't really an option, I would be concerned how long the GTX1070 would handle in a couple of years. No option to get a 17" GTX1070 with 1080p G-sync either...

£1800 (currently on sale) so similar price to HP but doesn't have the Q Max 1070 like the Omen so should have more performance right?

Well I suppose you have to balance out the reduction in power from Max Q and a 1080p screen or a full 1070 driving a 1440p screen. They probably balance each other out. The HP is still on offer for £1673 instead of £1799. Only you can make the decision, mon ami.
