I was giving some though to upgrading my 290X to something like a 1080 (or maybe a Ti). I'm now considering just upgrading my whole system as I have money available.

Current Specs - 4690K, 8GB 2400Mhz, 290X 4GB. I run Ultrawide (3400 x 1440), do a bit of gaming (Rainbow Six Siege, BF1 etc) a bit of content creation (Premiere Pro / After Effects / Lightroom), and development (Visual Studio etc).

I was thinking of

1 CP-63S-IN Intel Core i7-8700 3.2GHz (Coffee Lake) Socket LGA1151 Processor - Retail £329.99 £329.99
1 MB-6AJ-AS Asus Prime Z370-P Intel Z370 (Socket 1151) DDR4 ATX Motherboard £121.99 £121.99
1 MY-087-TG Team Group Vulcan T-Force 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 PC4-24000C16 3000MHz Dual Channel Kit - Grey (TLGD416G30 £158.99 £158.99
1 GX-101-ZT Zotac GeForce GTX 1080 AMP Edition 8192MB GDDR5X PCI-Express Graphics Card (ZT-P10800C-10P) £518.99 £518.99

I think I just need a cooler, as I have a SSD/Case etc.

I like the 4690K CPU, you can overclock them a lot. I got one in my HTPC running at 4.5GHz with no issues. Have you done this already? I dont think upgrading is worth it unless your CPU is clearly a bottleneck for the things you are doing.

I've been considering the same thing. Do I keep my 4690k, grab a 4790k, or save up for something better. 4690k to 4790k is about a 30% increase looking at 3DMark CPU scores. Given the cost of getting the updated CPU, even after selling the 4690k, doesn't really seem worth it.

Although the alternative of course is a new motherboard, RAM and process of choice.

Thing is you can:

A) sell i5 for an i7-fairly cheap.
B) go coffee lake i5 or i7-stonking performance.
C) Ryzen now-great value for money with performance and cores.
D) wait till next year with both Amd and intel refresh-means waiting!
