PSU Adequate for an upgrade?

Hey all,

Recently started getting parts together for an upgrade to my CPU/MB/RAM from my sig spec to a Ryzen 5 1600 based system. I'm going to be looking into moving to a GTX1060 or 1070 in the near future too.

I hadn't considered any other parts in my system but I was wondering if my PSU could give me any potential issues with this new hardware? I'm currently running a Cooler Master Silent Pro 700W that I bought when OCUK were having a sale back in 2011. It has all the connectors that I'd need, just not sure what the lifespan of this PSU is like.

Don't want to end up with any dead parts due to an older PSU.

Thanks for any insights!

Silent Pro M or Silent Pro Gold? The Pro M (bronze rated) wasn't a particularly good psu but the Pro Gold was ok. If it's the Pro M I would replace it due to being a pooere quality psu but if it's the Pro Gold I am in two minds. While it is a decent psu built by Enhance with a single 12v rail of 672w it is 6 years old now. It has more than enough power for your intended upgrade so shouldn't give you any problems it's just that 6 years old is sort of a no-mans land in the middle of where we would normally say replace it. I would probably wait and see if any good psu deals come up on Black Friday but otherwise keep it for another year or two and then replace it.

80+ Bronze model sure is "less than optimal".
While having very good cooling for power semiconductors those big heatsinks also hinder cooling of second rate capacitors, which are also buried under wire spaghetti.

While still not hot at cooling of caps 80+ Gold has better components. (Enhance is obsessed with huge heatsinks)
Secondary seems to have mix of usual Chemicons and some Rubycons.
(primary caps from Matsushita-Panasonic)

Yeah I have the 700W M version, not the gold. I'll look into getting an upgrade there before installing the new parts.

As I picked up the a Superflower 350W last week and haven't had any issues, just looked through OCUKs selection of higher wattage units and picked out these.

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £176.08 (includes shipping: £11.10)

Firstly, will 550W be adequate for a R5 1600 + GTX1070 with overclocks applied?

Secondly, I just want to clarify that the only difference between these two PSUs is that one is platinum rated and hard-wired and the other is gold rated and modular?

550W is enough for that level graphics card unless you overclock both CPU and GPU lot.

Super Flower Platinum King serie is firmly second tier PSU.
It uses cheap C(r)apXon capacitors in secondary and those are somewhere between second and third tier in quality in good day.
And those are sandwiched between 12V rectifier heatsink and DC-DC daughterboard or under wire spaghetti so design isn't best for maximizing capacitor life.

Leadex Gold has quality components, unless it's been "updated" silently.
But Seasonic Focus Plus is cheaper for twice the warranty and top level technical performance.

Also for same price as Leadex Gold there would be 650W BitFenix Whisper M with 7 year warranty.

(650W Seasonic £5 more)

Unless you like having unused cables wrapped inside case modular cables are very nice feature to have.

Like I said earlier, 550w is more than enough for just about any single gpu system. To give you a idea of power draw the system in my siggy (cpu and memory are both overclocked and overvolted) plus all the watercooling stuff (pumps, fans, fan controllers, temp monitors, led's) hit a max of 272w at the wall while gaming (depending on the game). While benching with the GPU (GTX1070) heavily overclocked as well that rises to 300w so as you can see there is plenty of headroom for your proposed build.

The Seasonic Focus Plus 550w would be my choice. Double the warranty of the Superflower Leadex at 10 years and cheaper too. It is also very compact at only 140mm long. You can read a review here.

The Seasonic Focus looks to be a good unit and the JonnyGuru review has me sold on it. I'll definitely get that sorted out before installing my new parts.

Thank you both for your answers, much appreciated!
