Hi Guys,

I have a friend with the following specs:
  • fx 6300 at 4.0GHz
  • 8gb DDR3 (cant remember brand type)
  • Very cheap gigabyte mobo (no heatsinks over VRM)
  • MSI 7950
  • 500W OCZ-CXS500W PSU

It plays all of his fav games relatively well but I have some old parts I was meant to sell and they have been sitting in my cupboard for almost a year now.

  • FX 8320 (can hit 4.8GHz stable)
  • 990FX crosshair v formula-z
  • corsair H90 CLC
He has had a bit of a rough year financially and cant afford to upgrade so I thought I would give him these, OC the 8320 as far as I can with his setup, and also OC the 7950.

I have a few Q's:

  1. Do you think it's even worth the bother? (fps wise)
  2. Can this PSU even take the OC on an 8350?
  3. Can you recommend any cheap pc cases with 140mm fan mounts for the cooler?

Cheers

Thanks ANDARIAL. I'm surprised there arent any with the 140mm fans, I might be able to swop my nhd-14 into his case and keep the H90 for myself.

Seems like a downgrade for me tho?

Ryzen 1200 or 1400 and gaming 3 or other board for £60-87 and ddr4 , even if it's 2444hz .
Ryzen 1400 will clear the floor with the above but as you say cash is right. Might be worth seeing if there's any boxing day sales or B Grade items

I have the same set up, 8320 and a 7950. It's still a decent rig for mid to low gaming in most newer games. Also been using it for VR and while I have to turn SS down it still runs most games fine.

It is starting to show its age but if its free then worth a go. It will keep him going for a while longer until funds are better.
