Hello
Was just wondering what cooling would be best for my build. I was thinking of the h115i aio but been told that a high end noc air cooler would be better as there would be no risk of a leak.
What do you think and recommend?

Welcome to the forum.

  • Good PSU.
  • Don't bother with that Crucial M.2, it's as fast as a regular SATA SSD. Better to save the M.2 slot/s for faster M.2 drives in future, or you'll be like hmm what do I do with the Crucial now? Get a Samsung 850 Evo SATA SSD instead for the same price.
  • Leaks are rare with top of the range AIOs from NZXT, Corsair, BeQuiet. But if you don't care about looks and care about silence, go for Noctua NH-D15 or D15S. Because pump noise can sometimes be an issue with AIOs depending on your particular unit. They tend to have noisy fans too (except the BeQuiet AIOs which have good fans).
Linking to competitors isn't allowed, so I'd remove the link and just copy/paste the part names.

NH-15 is a good cooler but is also a huge brick of aluminum.

pump noise is a non issue on the latest AIOs with the gen 5 pump. For me I'd rather not have a 1.2kg block hanging off my motherboard others don't care. in saying that I'm currently running the standard wraith cooler than came with my ryzen 1700

Truth is good air cooling is best, and while Noctua make great coolers they are not better than about a dozen brands and modesl of top tier coolers. In fact the Thermalright Le Grand Macho RT is a little better than anything out there, but the difference is like 1-2c and 2-5dB .. not worth worrying about. Other great coolers are
TRUE Spirit 140 Power (can't post price as OcUK does not allow if they do not stock it)

Cryorig R1 £72.95

https://www.overclockers.co.uk/cryo...atsink-with-2x-140mm-fan-black-hs-003-cy.html

PH-TC14PE (Phanteks changed 14PE fins from 2 piece to single piece and I have not tested new version, but they claim it performs the same) £59.99

https://www.overclockers.co.uk/phanteks-ph-tc14pe-cpu-cooler-silver-hs-000-pt.html

Dark Rock Pro 3 (couple degrees warmer but very quiet) out of stock £74.99
https://www.overclockers.co.uk/be-quiet-dark-rock-pro-3-cpu-cooler-hs-007-bq.html

and of course Noctua NH-D15 (can block PCIe socket) £84.95

NH-D14 £70.99
https://www.overclockers.co.uk/noctua-nh-d14-dual-radiator-cpu-cooler-hs-011-nc.html

NH-D15S £74.99
https://www.overclockers.co.uk/noctua-nh-d15s-dual-radiator-quiet-cpu-cooler-hs-031-nc.html

NH-U14S out of stock £62.99
https://www.overclockers.co.uk/noct...lim-cpu-cooler-with-nf-a15-fan-hs-000-nd.html

Above list is only ones I've used and tested .. there are many more like Alpenfohn, Scythe, Raijintek.
, Reeven, etc.

yes it is not cheap though when you compare it to a NH14 or even a NH15.
What is the flow rate of Gen5 pump? I know older versions are 40-60L/h, and new ones are same size so assume they are similar, but Asetek does not publish specifications (not even pump amp load rating) so it's impossible to know without disassembling one and measuring

My mobile is fine with huge block after years being vertical, so by the time if there any damage I'd want a new motherboard anyway.

Try bending and breaking a motherboard till it snaps if you think they are easy to break.

What hornetstinger said.

I dare you to show me a single accurate image of motherboard damage caused by big cooler on it .. even one that was been severally abused like tossing system overhead or throwing it down a flight of stairs.

I booted my pc once in a fit of rage, that's a good way to kill a motherboard and a hdd :).

I said some people don't like the idea of it
Reality is big coolers are not a problem an do not damage motherboards unless system is handled abusively. OcUK posts pre-built systems with big coolers by courier all the time and rarely has any problems .. and couriers are known to throw boxed products over 7' fences.

Currently using the Brocken 3. Very quiet, cools superbly and only weighs ~ 850g with a fan attached. Mounting system is a breeze also, installed mine without removing the motherboard. Does not cover any of my RAM slots, so tall heat spreaders will not be a problem. The only problem i can see is if the cooler doesn't fit in the case or if you use a MATX/ITX motherboard as it may cover the PCIE slot.

Should point out that i have owned a couple of AIOs over the years and never had a problem with leaks or pump noise. (even the infamous Triton, removed this just in case)

Ultimately it is up to the OP, But he should not discount big air coolers.

I'm debating between noc-d15, macho rev b and h115i
I'm so indecisive its annoying
Edit: Noise is something I am taking into consideration, don't want a jet engine in my room kek

I have to say that I do agree that motherboards are fine with the weight, but large metal heat-sinks give me sleepless nights, lol. I think nightmares are one of the reasons I favour water-cooling so much. I just have bad dreams about distorting sockets and de-laminating boards. Lol.

Oh and the h115i with stock fans isn't quiet! Those fans just will not go low enough RPM to be quiet. If you want quiet you need to change the stock fans. Replace them with the Corsair ML PRO fans.

fans on the H115i are not quiet but the AIO should be cooler than the air coolers. noctua fans have a distinct sound that I personally find unpleasant. all three will give good cooling results.

Maybe should be, but they are not, especially at same noise level.

If you have the room, TRUE Spirit 140 Power is very good, but it's tall and wide. The best cooler right now is Thermalright Le Grand Macho RT cooling slightly better than D15 and quieter too.
