Looking to build a new system with around £1200 budget I'm currently torn between i5 8400 or ryzen 1600.

System will be mostly used for gaming at 1080p until I can afford a new monitor.

Currently got:

I5 2500k @ 4.8
8gb ddr3
crucial mx200 512gb
Xfx 480 8gb Gtr
BenQ xl2420t 120hz
Got a refurbished HX1200i
I've got enough large capacity storage.

Any help would be appreciated

i'd be tempted to say that you could hold off a full upgrade currently.
parts to upgrade would be the 2500k to either a 3770k (preferably) or a 2600k
and get another 8gb ram to make 16gb
this should last a while yet, as the limiting factor is the rx480 - but that being said, the rx480 is a solid mid-range card good enough for 1080p gaming (even if it won't push 120hz)
all this should cost £150-£200, less once you flog your 2500k on the bay

of course, that being said, if you really feel the upgrade itch, then by all means, scratch it :p

I have both CPU above with gtx 1070ti and Vega 56. I5 8400 wins out just bit Ryzen is the smart cheaper option , specially now 8400 has gone from 170 to £220!!!!!!!
If you were to update, specially to Intel, i7 8700k as that's the logical choice, specially when you can find a 2nd hand i7.

Only thing now is Intel CPU are going to take a 15% performance hit with this security flaw :/

Get yourself a nice freesync screen

Cheers think I might try and get hold of an i7 3770k and some ram for now and save a bit more.

Liking the mini case, would make a nice change from the haf x lol

So I picked up the ram but having trouble finding a 3770k that I fell is good value, especially after the recent events I'm not sure that I want one now as 4th gen and older will be hit hardest by the patch.

Now thinking 1800x as it's currently £288, any recommendations for air cooler and is the GIGABYTE GA-AB350-Gaming 3 the board of choice?

Cheers.

Gaming 3 , Strix for visual looks and ASRock Pro 4 - Gigabyte gets favoured due to strong rep presence and UK RMA (retailer handles it but you can go direct to Gigabyte or have reps check on issues etc)

most use stock cooler as it can handle 3.7Ghz overclock but since your going X - depends is you want an enclosed liquid system or go air ?

then style, fuction and sound comes into play
