It is worth noting the 9800GTX(+) wasn't really a top end card. Rebrand of an 8800GT from memory.

No that was the 9800 GT :)

You are both right :) The 9800 range were all 65nm versions of the G80 that the 8800 GTX. The 8800 GT was a 65nm version of the same chip.

The first 9800 GT was exactly the same as the 8800 GT, they did a 55nm version later on.

The same with the 9800GTX, they released a 55nm version called the 9800 GTX+ which rebranded as the GTS 250.

That's the reason the 8800 GT, and the 9800 series cards were all so cheap. :)

I dont think its so much the top end prices that are the biggest issue, more the mid range prices, few people actually buy the *80/*80 ti versions and those that do would probably buy them regardless. The problems are the lack of the *70 cards we need more practical cards around the 300 mark where the 70 series used to sit. Paying 500 for a mid range setup is the problem

Actually the rebrands/renames followed this path:

8800GT became 9800GT became OEM GTS240

8800GTS (512MB) became 9800GTX became 9800GTX+ became GTS250 and then finally became dodgy Chinese GTX780s lol.

these prices are much higher than they should be. its not just ddr5 prices etc.... its retailers adding extra on top of all that. big time.
during christmas zotac amp extreme 1080ti was for 750£, now 1050. thats 300£ more. yes of course thats "normal". nah, its the fact that ocuk has stock so they skyrocket the price up up up and up. I dont rly like it to be honest and the prices should be much more reasonable. even those asus strix for 990 is nonsense, when they used to be 750 just a while ago..

Talking about the G92 rebrands has left me reminiscing on my 9800GX2, such an epic card. God I miss the days when Nvidia/AMD would put two of their top chips on one card (and the days when AIB partners were allowed to do it).

It really isn't, when the cost to retailers goes up they have to raise their prices to make profit or they will go out of business, it's that simple. I think it's pretty cool that OCUK have been open with forum users about the costs/etc involved and 8-10% margin on a product you ship for free is more than reasonable.

it should be quite simple

*60 = 250/300
*70 = 350/400
*80 = 500
*80ti = 6-700

I looked at that and immediately felt saddened that anyone could consider that how it should be, remembering how only a couple of years ago I bought an overclocked AIB *70 card that performed like a stock *80 from OCUK for £160. Then I realised that was 2010, and it's now 2018, time flies XD

they are not making only 8% margin selling 1080ti's for £900+, that was in reference to the voucher codes they did with a 1080ti at £690 etc. £900+ for a 1080ti is pure price gouging, and if they are getting away with it then props to them, they are a business after all, but no way I'm paying that type of price for cards that are about to be superceded

If they were making 8% on the £750 1080ti's with the codes then it's still only 20% at most for the £900 cards (VAT scales) which is a perfectly acceptable markup for a retailer when you factor in they're responsible for transit/aftersales/etc.

8800GT was just about the pinnacle of value for GPUs IMO. Had two in SLi for a number of years.

That and the X800GTO2 I had that unlocked to a full X850XT.

I dont recall any of the *70s' being 160 quid the 670s that came a little after were 280+ brand and clock dependant the 4/500 series of cards couldnt have been much different

Sooo much this mate??

People bitching stuff is expensive?? I remember buying 512kb of ram for my amiga 500 for like 100 quid back in1995 or something.
Or my first 30mb drive for few hundtrd quid and pound would been worth 2x more than it is today!!

By my standards all pc **** is cheap now.

Not to mention that 2 years after spending 5000 on a pc it was USELESSand you needed new one !!!! As technology was going forward soo fast!!
