I see threads like this and cringe at the Mk1 Escort Mexico me and a mate drove to destruction on his dads farm back in the day and weighed in for scrap once it seized and then did the same to a Mk2 1600 Sport, whilst shabby they weren’t beyond saving by a long way and both would have been worth a small fortune today! :o

Not a hot hatch, but a better buy (IMO) would be a Porsche 944.

A decent S2 or turbo is going to set you back in the region of 20k. I could realm off a list of better hot hatches for that. Infact it would be better spent on a 996 carrera or maybe even a 4s. You really need to want a 944 to buy one.

Just to put it into perspective a decent engined 1989 944 costs about the same as a 1989 R32 GTR. Typical insane Porsche prices.

Maestro Turbo, can be had under 5k and only going to go up in value.

Granted, its hard to find parts or a clean one to start with but awesome fun cars.

To be fair, I think I’d rather something else from it’s era, they were never class leaders and far from models of reliability nor build quality when new, never mind now.

That said though, it’s main competition back in the day was the Escort RS Turbo (I had an S1 & S2) you’d struggle to get even a shed of an example of one of those now for anything near £5k alas.

True, my friend has an original black one, it turns heads everywhere it goes.. granted on the reliability factor though, it took abit of upgrading to sort that.

S1's weren't much better, their electrics were an absolute nightmare.

S2 doesn't stand out from the XR3i for me.

205 GTI are awesome but the cost of them recently has shot up to a point where its not really worth buying one, unless its what you desperately want.

I think the Clio 172/182 shout is a great one, one of the best handling hot hatches going, not hard to get hold of at the minute and certainly will be a classic in years to come.

I think I was lucky with my S1 (bar it being stolen multiple times!) it’s electrics we’re fine even after numerous ignition lock replacements!!

The S2 on the other hand was less fun to drive and indeed too similar to the XR3i and it’s electrics weren’t good, it would unlock itself randomly - needless to say that one got nicked a few times too never to be seen again ultimately.

Out of them all I thought the 1.6 205Gti was epic despite French electrics, I never owned one but drove a mates regularly and liked it far more than the 1.9 he replaced it with.

106s are great fun, even the poverty ones. Probably easier adding a few choice parts to a clean base model than finding a reasonably priced GTI or Rallye. I'd love an S1 Rallye.

How are Puma's nowadays?

Mostly very rusty. Think they will be a future classic but the Racing Puma will be the one to have. The standard production versions were relatively unloved even when knew, can't see them gaining popularity like the XR2, XR3i and RS Turbo etc, few will have ever had a standard Puma and considered it to be their pride and joy!
