Having very recently built a friends new gaming PC (z370,8700k,gtx1080ti), I now feel the itch to upgrade!
I don't have the kind of budget he had, and from what I can see, for gaming, the 7700k is pretty much on the pace of the 8700k.
So I was thinking of a z270 mobo, 7700k, and a GTX1080. (I will be running on a 2560x1080 75hz Ultrawide monitor).
I can put this together for nearly £500 under what we spent on his, do you think its worthwhile ?

It would need to be a 4790k ... maybe too long in the tooth :p

Rethinking this, I think an i5 8600k with a £120 Z370 mobo that can clock well is not going to cost any more than the i7-7700k route ....

Definitely replace the 970, but apart from that the 4 series CPU's are still very good indeed. If you could find a 4790K to pop in there you are good for some years to come. But the 970 is definitely showing it's age already. A 1070 is so, so much faster.

I guess, but as pastymuncher says, they are still expensive and running slower ddr3.
I had to scratch my itch, so i5 8600k, Asrock Extreme4, 16gb HyperX DDR4 3200 with a GTX 1080 OC on the way :o
