i’ve just sold my Ford Focus Ecoboost, a tragic little time in my life where I decided to ‘grow up’ and ditch my fascination with performance cars. Comicallly my main regret was buying a Ford, at the time the 1.0 Ecobostt really impressed me and it still does, but its wrapped in a Ford. Not really something which makes you smile when you turn back for a glance or look out of the window.

I set out convincing myself to get a nice grey Audi A3 or A5 S-line. Previously owned an S3 and do like the Audi aesthetic and interior. Ive also had a Golf GTI and R32. The difference this time is I even considered a diesel, but if Im being honest with myself I know I’ll detest the sound and the power delivery. More than anything else, I do a very short commute daily and probably only 4000-5000 miles annually. The DPF issues scare me for this reason.

So OcUK...per title...something German, petrol, well equipped and sporty looking. Wide budget for now, lets say £10,000-£14,000.

Ford Focus doesn't excite or interest much anymore... Hmm, let's buy an Audi A3. The pinnacle of excitement :D

I'd be looking at something like a 1 Series, personally. A 125i M Sport will be quite enjoyable should you fancy a bit of a blast, but I'm sure the 118i will be more than adequate too.

On the road....
My partner just got a 6k mike 65 plate 118d Sport for £14k, an approved used car from BMW to replace her 12plate 50k mike Focus Zetec Tdci, whilst we both liked the Focus and found it a great all rounder, the 1 is leagues ahead of the Focus and very much feels more like a premium product, it’s a lot quicker, handles better yet is thus far matching the Focus for mpg (50 mpg overall average on both)

I’d you don’t want diesel (I’d certainly try one first mind you) then the 118i could be worth a shout.

One thing though comparing the two on test drives we found the Sport is quite firm and the M-Sport very much more so, we went for the Sport ultimately as we preferred the ride.

Expensive but rather boring unless it's one with a big engine. Even then...

Much more fun with a Ford ST for the same money :p
