I went from 2500k@ 4.6ghz to 4770k @ 4.4ghz to Ryzen 1700 @ 3.9ghz, both @ 1440p 144hz, what i can tell you is this the 4770k felt smoother than the 2500k, but the 1700 is even smoother than the 4770k, incredibly more smoother infact.

I only really play MMORPGS (WoW, ESO, Rift, EQ) and ARPGS (D3, Grim Dawn, POE) and the Ryzen by far is the best experience ive had, the fact i can alt tab out instantly while playing to look up quest info, or watch a youtube video etc and tab back in instantly was a massive plus for me.

I leave Chrome open with atleast 12 tabs open, zero impact on my gaming, on my 4770k this would often give me stuttering issues at times, especially in ARPGs, these have been eliminated with the Ryzen chip.

With more and more engines moving towards multicore usage now the Ryzen is only going to get better, ESO just announced their next big update will have better multicore optimisation, i cannot wait as currently the engine is a bit naff.

If i was buying right now, id buy the 2700X + the best high end board i could get and then shut up shop for a couple of years minimum as quite frankly you wont need to do anything to the rig for a long time, coupled with the fact you can leave the 2700X at stock speed, as the XFR2 will tune the CPU for single threaded stuff and push the frequency up, and then for multicore stuff it will start pushing other cores etc, so not even any need to really tinker with an overclock. Add in the cooler than comes with it and your already on to a winner.

As a WoW player myself, it plays better on intel. If you'd gone from the 4770k to an 8700k you would still feel overall smoothness increase with the 2 extra cores and 4 extra threads, you just would've had a better time with framerates. Your 4770k OC'd outperforms the 1700 in 99% of games in terms of framerates, your advantage with the 1700 is if you stream at all or do any production. Glad you liked the upgrade though!

As a side note, I run a 4670k and often have twitch, with a good 15-20 chrome tabs open in the background, without any negative performance impact. Maybe you've got a memory leak on chrome or something? I'm not hating at all, just curious as to why you experienced it :(

i actually find my 1700 to be slightly faster than my 4770k in games, as well as more fluid and smoother. I dont really ever stream anything, the 1700 is just overall more snappier, but that may also be going from DDR3 8GB to DDR4 16GB with tuned memory that has helped that, i was running 2400mhz ram on the 4770k.

But in MMO's you are right, Intel generally has the lead as the single core perf is a little higher than the AMD perf, until more MMO engines use more cores this wont change, hopefully ESO's imminent engine overhaul for core usage is reflected in better overall performance for me.

But like i say, as someone who went from 2500k to 4770k to 1700 i noticed the leap in fluidness each time, 4770k over 2500k was a lot smoother, but 1700 over 4770k again was a lot smoother, it just is, maybe im more susceptible to these things.

Urm..

So yeah the OP asks which chip to go for..

I had the same choice and went for 2700X, due to reason above. I have no idea why this would require a wall of text from you?

People have different opinions, I gave mine.
And I have no idea why you've quoted me. I didn't reply to one of your posts. Wake up, fella.

Runs cooler.

Nope. It not run much cooler than either Ryzen 7 1700X and 1800X, it is much hotter than 1800X.

Reviewers should tested both 2600X and 2700X with heavy CPU intensive games for temp measures, not Overwatch because Overwatch is not heavy CPU intensive game. Run heavy CPU intensive games on 2600X and 2700X will see temp soaring to around 90C or higher with stock cooler just like Blender test.

It shame you cant ever delid 2600X and 2700X because it is soldered so you would need a massive water cooler like Corsair H150i Pro with 360mm radiator to keep temp down and run cooler.

Good to see my 8700K still the king for games.

Well I am mostly playing WoW, and want to upgrade for BFA. I play other stuff too though, like Overwatch, Skyrim(modded), Battlefield 1, amongst other things. I would tell you what my monitor is but windows it telling me it's ZOWIE XL LCD, so eh, yeah.

I do sometimes stream, but only when my girlfriend is away and she wants to watch. Also means I'm more than likely skyping at the same time as playing, with my browser open as well. It sounds like based on the comments that the Ryzen 2700x would be my best bet.. so many conflicting opinions and bias's though makes it hard for me to decide :(

Have you tried either of these chips?

My 2700X is yet to exceed 50c on a £50 AIO.

Safe to say it runs very cool xD

Is it?

This is a processor that makes me question why anyone would now buy the 8700K instead. The Intel chip is more expensive, slower in computational tasks, and doesn’t offer any frame rate boost for you games. So why bother?

When the difference is ~5% in gaming and wins everywhere else, and the Intel chip being on a dead socket I think people are clutching at straws for reasons to pick it. I really do.

Each to their own though. I'll enjoy this 2700X and check out Intels next 8 core, as that prob will be a decent chip.

is that stock clocks? your single thread score is a bit ropey. which is what you should be looking at for game performance really as most dont use all the cores.

I think the 2700x is the default approach if your at 1440p.

At 1080p and you care about literally just a few FPS then 8700k.

its about the refresh rate of your display and target frame rate rather than resolution.

If its modded FO4(seeing as you mod Skyrim),I suspect an overclocked Core i5 8600K might have the edge there, although the Ryzen 2 CPUs seem to be much better than the earlier ones in the game.

Make sure you get RAM which uses Samsung B-die,since AFAIK its still apparently the best RAM for Ryzen systems(unless that has changed recently).

Absolutely B-die if you want and need top timings. The reality is though, even 16-16-16 Hynix ram has worked on Ryzen 1 at 3200 speeds for longer than i care to remember. I ran 4x8gb of it at that speed for far longer than i have run 4x8gb of B-die at 14-14-14 at 3333.

I chose my 1700 for the 8 core / 16 thread and the AM4 socket being supported for at least 3 generations. At the time it was a 1700 or a 7700k which made it easier. Coming from an i5-760 it was a huge improvement.
