Been this way for a while now. Generally speaking:

< 1.30v eg 1.26-1.28v 5GHz stable = golden CPU.

1.30v 5GHz stable = silver CPU.

1.35v+ 5GHz stable = good CPU.

1.4v+ 5GHz stable = stinker.

I like the theory that they wimped out on making it an all core 5GHz part.

Sure it would have a massive TDP but it would be notable instead of this tepid trading blows with the same cpu it is made from...

It's a limited edition after all, there's freedom in that to do something outrageous and they didn't.

Enjoying mine. Got it to 5.2ghz at 1.35v and cpu cache ratio at 49, not tried higher no need. It crashed at 5.3mhz. Seemed worth the extra to get the 8086k as this is the kind of overclock i wanted. Enjoyed Assassin’s creed origins at ultra now buttery smooth unlike my 6700k.

The first batches are always the best.

Our very first deliveries of 8700k would do around 5.2GHz on stock IHS with good cooling, the odd 5.3GHz and though extremely rare 5.4GHz.
Unfortunately current stock of 8700K is now around 4.8GHz with 5GHz been now quite lucky, so the first deliveries are generally the best.

The 8086k is the cream of the crop from Intel, we had 1000pc arrive for the launch, so all same batch, were down to 550 units now, so sales have been absolutely superb on this part, at the moment we are struggling to source additional as it is a limited product, hence why its not widely available as the bigger resellers gobbled up all the stock and I think its fair to say OcUK has the lions share getting 1000 units as most of our competitors got less than 50 units.

Same has gone for AMD in the past, I had a first batch chip that smashed anything after it a few years back.

Speaking of having decent ram I've been running these 3ghz sodimms (cl16) for 2 years but they really can't go much beyond that. Any chance of some high performance sodimms?

We can look into it but the demand for high performance SODIMM is minimal, plus most SODIMM mainboards have very limited overclocking features.

I know the x299 asrock sodimm kits had some headroom, would probably not match the ratings but get closer to 3500mhz.

As expected it's just a 8700K binned for higher out-of-the-box clock speeds.

As someone who has owned both Coffee Lake and Ryzen, and a 1440p G-Sync monitor, I can't agree with your assertion. Indeed, the reason I still have my "placeholder" 1600 is entirely because I didn't notice this supposed gulf in performance. And indeed even taking subjective and perceived experience out of the equation, my overclocked 1080 Ti taps out long before the CPU does in anything remotely demanding, as measured objectively by MSI Afterburner's OSD. In terms of stuff I have installed right now that can make decent use of a 1080 Ti - Far Cry 5, Assassin's Creed: Origins, Watch Dogs 2, Mirror's Edge: Catalyst, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, Quantum Break, Mass Effect: Andromeda - my GPU is pegged at 100%, which means I have nothing to gain from throwing more CPU power at it.

Perhaps you could name some games where I'm apparently really missing out. I'll give you World of Warcraft, where a highly-clocked Intel CPU certainly does provide a notable benefit, though I feel that's a poor argument for buying an 8700K when an overclocked G3258 would provide the same benefit.

The gpu being pegged at 100% isn't an indicator that you wouldn't gain fps from a more powerful CPU. By that logic I'd gain nothing upgrading my CPU, which isn't true. Fps isn't solely limited by gpu power unless you game at 4k, at which point it mostly is currently.
