Hiya guys,
I'm trying to help a friend sort a new rig out and I'm torn as to which direction to go in.

Either
Asus Rampage extreme VI x299
7820X

Or
Asus Rog Maximus Formula
8700K

Main use is gaming, which would normally mean 8700k, my only concern with that is I don't want to spec a 1151 build only for z390 and 8c cpus to be released in a month.

He's a bit of an overkill expert and likes the idea of an X299 build (he loved mine).

Not sure what to do really, I've recently sold my own x299 build with 7820x @4.8 and performance was stellar.

Any help would be great.
Cheers

Z390 and (last i heard it was called ) 8c 9900k is Q3 so not that long .
Asus has already confirmed Naming schemes and pretty much follows z370/270 boards .

With cards and now high end screens costing so much, money spent on x299 & it's core could be used there

It's not so much a money issue, he's already leaning more towards x299 and a 7820x-7920x because it's not due a change soon.

It'll be mostly a gaming rig , 1440P, 144hz, where I imagine any gains the 8700K has over the x299 cpus disappears due to the res.

I've mentioned he could buy 8700k and the formula now and sell them when the new stuff lands, hopefully won't lose to much.

Still has faster core speed for most games that don't rely on thread count but speed and then newer games that do use threads, still favour speed .

Believe new x299 chips will be out, sure x399 as intel wasn't going to follow suit with jumping a 100 in number (x99 - x299 ) and fight AMD at its own game X399 . Will have to double check that

Well happy with my 8700k@5Ghz tbh, and I'm sure it'll last a good long time (a couple of Ti iterations before it bottlenecks I reckon = yeaaars).

I still think he shouldn't of been so tight and gotten that sweet sweet rig of yours. Hell, if I hadn't pretty much just built this 8700k rig I'd of had it! :) ;)

Lol I know bud, he's a tight bugger, he's spending more now than if he had just bought my rig too.

I've tried getting it across that the 8700k will be plenty for what he wants, I think it's the fact that the new chipset is really close (or it seems to be) that's stopping him just getting that.

Serves him right :D

Tell him buy now or wait, totally his choice. As long as he isn't mucking you around (I know what friends can be like, take the **** sometimes and take **** for granted. I don't take that kind of crap anymore, too old :D).

Same bud, tbh I'll probably just spec a 8700k build and x299, put them in a hat and tell him to pick one.

Waiting always sounds sensible but then he will miss out on the weeks of having a fantastic rig. The actual differences on a day to day basis will probably not be noticeable except in the benchmarks (even between the 8700k v 9700k) and whilst I might be biased I do like my 7820x (runs nicely at 4.7 but gets a bit loud so I've backed off to 4.3 with a 4.5 intel turbo boost 3.0 on 2 cores).
