I've never really played around with Linux, but recently I had to install Ubuntu for a customer and I was pleasantly surprised by the installer and the ability to try out Ubuntu before installing.

At the moment I use a USB stick with Ultimate Boot CD on it to test out machines. But the miniXP on it is getting a little long in the tooth and rarely sees hard drive now. So I was wondering if it's possible to install Ubuntu on a USB drive and use it on different machines, will the install see the different hardware and work o.k?

Also can anyone recommend Linux friendly software I can use for testing. The main software I use are, HD Tune, Memtest 86 and Prime 95.

I already have a USB installer. What I need to know is if a USB with Ubuntu installed on it, can be swapped between different machines.

Use tools installed by default on the USB stick to repair or fix a broken
configuration

If in the case of just using an installer, can additional programs be installed?
