Seagate Backup Plus Desktop drives

I wanted to know what would happen if the enclosure electronics fail - Can I simply plug the drive in using a usb adapter and access my files? or will i need to format the drive to use it again?

I'm pretty sure the answer is yes. I bought a cheap 8TB one a while back to extract the drive from and think the original file system was visible when attached directly via sata cable to my pc.
