Must be a man thing then as we dont see women crouching by the side of the road. They seem able to hold it in.

I'm 100% sure that they train themselves to hold it. Who can blame them when they have to sit down on all manner of disgusting toilet seats.

This. It is only very recently that it has been considered socially acceptable for Women to use the loo outside of their own homes At all.

This is the main reason why, especially in older public buildings like theaters. Not only were facilities for Women very limited (Really, emergencies only) but also the Bars were a lot smaller because only the men would have been expected to have drinks in the interval.

pee and no ability to wash hands? no thanks, seems most people don't bother in regular toilets anyway though :S

I always grab a paper towel to open the doors in public toilets for this very reason and try to avoid touching door handles anywhere because they are guaranteed to be full of germs

This isn't true - there's a couple in the city that are underground in the daytime and come out at night (also female ones) but the vast majority are there permanently and smell awful. However it is a good solution and does reduce public urination, especially when many bars and restaurants charge to use the toilet (McDonalds included).

Amsterdam has quite a few. Je had wel beter moeten weten, anngezien dat je er woont ;)

There's a few of these dotted around Camden, with a few more modern ones that sink into the ground during the day.

A bit grim but it's better than having it along the streets.

There used to be something similar in my town on a weekend that looked like this:

Horrible things. Thankfully the night life of clubbers disappeared from here as the clubs closed and it turned into more of a wine bar & wetherspoons type town and so they did away with them.

I once saw someone eating a kebab while using these facilities.

anyone remember when city centres used to have public toilets? Nottingham used to have them underneath the square where the water thing is now.
Newcastle used to have some at the side of st james where a statue now stands.

if they are going to put urinals in the street why don't they just put a toilet with closeable door? some city centres had them anyway

You know that's a map of these right? Of course there are many urinals, but as I said very few go underground ;)

Badly needed in Paris - been a few times and there's always a strong smell of urine in some areas. Not a great look for the city. Those urinals that disappear underground are a brilliant idea. Lots of people get caught short on the way home and having one of those present stops them going no the pavement.

Following our month or two of dry weather here we had a massive downpour and the whole of Chelsea smelled like a urinal due to all the pee being washed away. It was absolutely disgusting.

Badly need more in London too! But might that have been the sewers suddenly flooding with nothing but pure wee in them?

The ones in Amsterdam also disappear in to the ground when demand is low, and have a complete cleaning system in the ground to ensure they smell minty fresh when you go break the seal.
Reading has had these since 2002...
